Etienne Sabino (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) wasn't a prospect that everyone knew about last fall, but then he exploded on the scene at Scout.com's Miami combine. Since that time he has piled up scholarship offers from all of the top programs in the country. The next several days he'll be visiting two Midwest powers in order to see what the programs have to offer.
"I'll be at Notre Dame [Thursday] for the day and then I'm going to Ohio State," Sabino responded when asked about his pending visits. "I'm going to both schools for the day. Those are the only schools that I'm going to visit when I'm up there. We'll get into Chicago, drive to Notre Dame, then go to Columbus and then drive back to Chicago."
Notre Dame has done a terrific job of hosting recruits, with a number of recruits committing shortly after their unofficial visits.
"[The Notre Dame coaches] said that they're going to give me the grand tour," Sabino said. "I'm looking for comfort, academics, and football. I know Notre Dame has the academics and the football, I just want to see if I feel comfortable there. That's really the important thing. It isn't worth it to be miserable somewhere.
"I know they just got a commitment from a linebacker from Chicago (Steve Filer). Coach Brown keeps me informed with everything going on there. I'm very aware of what they're doing with recruiting. I know they have four linebackers now. They're willing to sign me, so they'd have five. That's not a problem with me at all. Anywhere I go I know that there will be competition. That's not a big problem for me. With the ‘3-4' four of us are going to get to play. Maybe all five of us would get a chance to play."
Last year the Irish were able to lure Miami running back Armando Allen to South Bend. Sabino knows about Allen and he'd like to get his feedback on Notre Dame.
"I spoke with him once," Sabino explained. "I'm looking forward to talking to him. He's pretty much from the same part of Florida that I am, so I want a chance to see how he likes things up there."
Sabino will take all of his official visits before he makes his college decision. He's tabbed USC and LSU as two of his visits. With a solid visit, the Irish could also receive one of his official visits.
