Rising junior Brent Seals (6-foot-0, 185 pounds) has been receiving recruiting mail from some top programs, but thus far he hasn't received anything from Notre Dame. That is likely to change and Seals hopes that it does.
"No, I haven't head from Notre Dame yet," Seals responded when asked if he had received recruiting literature from Notre Dame. "I've been hearing from Colorado, Washington, Stanford and Cal. I got my first letter from Colorado.
"I'd like to hear from Notre Dame. I'd like to hear from UCLA, USC, Oregon, mostly the PAC-10 schools. Notre Dame might be the only school [out East] that I'm interested in right now.
"I haven't been up to Notre Dame," Seals said. "They're a great school. They have a good football program, and they have great academics. I heard it's a nice place and that they have good facilities. Most of what I know has come from what I've seen on TV."
Last season Seals split time between safety and linebacker. In nine game he had 60 tackles and three interceptions.
"Last year I played linebacker and strong safety," Seals said. "This year I'll be playing linebacker and a little bit of running back. I've played running back every year I've played football except last year. I'm more of a power back. I have some speed, but I'm not flashy. I'm looking forward to getting some carries.
"I prefer defense, but it doesn't matter if I play linebacker or safety. I played safety the first half of the season, and the second half of the season I played linebacker because someone got injured. I prefer defense, because I like to hit opposed to being hit. I'm good at reading the plays. I get to the ball quickly and make the tackle. I don't miss many tackles. I think I'm a good leader on the field and off of the field."
Seals started making a name for himself on the field, but his performance at a few combines have been important as well.
"I went to the Nike combine at Long Beach, and the Prep Star combine," Seals explained. "I was invited to the Prep all-star combine that was held in the Rose Bowl, but I couldn't make it because our team had a passing tournament that day. I also went to the USC and UCLA camps."
Seals reported a 4.6 g.p.a.
