Jamel Leonard plays running back and the mike linebacker position for Interlachen High School(Fla.) "I think Jamel has the ability to play either at the college level, but I think he will end up playing linebacker," said his coach Mike Sinor, when asked about where he thinks Jamel fits the best. "When Jamel runs the ball he just runs people over, he's a very aggressive football player, and that is also what makes him a great linebacker."
Leonard hopes that will be the case as well. "I really like playing linebacker. I haven't played linebacker that long, so I have some things to work on such as my reads and things, but I really like playing linebacker." Sinor believes that Jamel will do just fine. "He's very coachable. He will do whatever you ask of him."
Jamel has attended camps at Florida, Georgia Southern, and Central Florida and has received mail from many top notch programs such as Florida State., Georgia, and Florida. "I'm interested in Florida State, Florida, Notre Dame and Miami," said Leonard. Notre Dame will have some work to do if they want to see Leonard end up in South Bend. "I grew up a big FSU fan because my dad is a big FSU fan. My dad sort of rubbed off on me."
Florida State has definitely taken notice of Jamel. "Some of Florida State's coaches were here a few weeks ago and saw him in the weight room and really liked what they saw," said Sinor. "Jamel's the real deal physically, he benches 380 pounds, squats 500 pounds, power cleans 290 pounds, and runs a 4.6 forty-yard dash). When the FSU coaches saw him, they knew that he was going to be a national recruit."
Jamel reports a 2.8 GPA and has yet to take the SAT or ACT.
