Chris Harper (6-foot-3, 222 pounds) has nearly twenty scholarships offers heading into the start of his season. Notre Dame is recruiting Harper as a wide receiver, but they haven't pulled the trigger on an offer quite yet.
"Coach Brown asked me what their chances [of signing me] would be if they offered me a scholarship," Harper responded when asked about his contact with the Notre Dame coaches. "I said that I'd take an official visit for sure if they offered me.
"Coach Brown ended up asking me to send them a schedule, so we could see when I could take an official visit. We talked about some games, but I'd like to come up for the USC game.
"We talked about the season, their practices, and how everything was going for them," Harper said. "He said that they really don't have anyone on their team that can do the things that I can do. I really didn't talk to him about recruiting though.
"I know he said before that they might have one of their best recruiting classes ever. They have the No.1 class so far, so that's a pretty big thing. You want to play with other great players, so that's a big deal. You even want good players at your position. Competition makes you better. If you're practicing with good players every day it's going to make you that much better."
Harper currently takes the ball from under center, and there are a number of schools that are recruiting him to play quarterback, but several top programs would like him to make a switch to wide receiver.
"I want to play quarterback," Harper explained. "If I played another position it would be at school like Notre Dame, Michigan, USC or other schools like that. I don't know what I really want to do right now. I'll need more time to think about it.
"Ole Miss, Alabama and Florida are really interested [in me as a quarterback]. I'm going to send them all film. They all want to see film of my first couple games. I also have film from a camp we did at our school this summer. We did a lot of seven-on-seven stuff and other passing stuff."
Harper is planning on narrowing his list of schools down to a manageable number a couple games into his senior season. At that point he'll also have a number of his official visits scheduled.
"I know I'm going to take a visit to Cal for sure," Harper said. "I'll probably take an official visit to some schools that are further away and take unofficial visits to some of the schools that are closer. My official visits [probably won't be to all of my top-five."
