McCarthy Is Keeping An Eye On ND

Notre Dame hasn't been able to change their fortunes on the field in 2007, but their recruiting for the 2008 class has been as good as ever. One of the top prospects in next year's freshman class is safety Dan McCarthy of Cardinal Mooney High School (Youngstown, Ohio)

Dan McCarthy plays quarterback for Cardinal Mooney, but at Notre Dame he'll likely play the same position as his brother does for the Irish, safety. Kyle hadn't landed much playing time during his career at Notre Dame, but since he made several big plays against Purdue, Kyle's playing time has increased.

"I talk to [Kyle] every week," McCarthy responded when asked how often he spoke with his brother. "He thinks they'll be fine, and just keep the faith. I'm definitely happy for him and it's good to see him out there. He's playing more of the nickel now. They're recruiting more for a free safety, but wherever they put me, I'll work at that and try to help them out.

"Anytime I'm home I watch them on TV. I think they've shown a lot of good things and I think we'll be fine. We've talked about coach Brown. We think he's a great coach, and he really knows what he's doing. I really think they'll get things figured out. The defense has been on the field a lot, but I think they've been doing a good job overall. Everybody goes through their ups and down. I think they're going through their downs right now, but I think our future is bright.

"I'm real excited about being a part of the class coming in and I think we'll do a lot of good things in the future," Dan explained". "I think the class is great and there are a lot of good kids in it. I've talked to a number of them and everyone seems to be on the same page. Everyone is excited about the class and it's just good to be a part of it."

While fans speculate as to which Notre Dame recruits will reconsider their commitment, Dan fully expects to be at Notre Dame next season.

"Not really," McCarthy replied when asked if other colleges have been trying to contact him. "I think I've made it pretty clear that I'm solid with Notre Dame."

Notre Dame has three home games remaining, but don't expect McCarthy to be in the stands on an unofficial visit. Cardinal Mooney is just about to begin their defense of last year's state championship.

"I think I've played pretty solid, but there is always room for improvement. Defensively and offensively I've been working hard," McCarthy explained." We just beat our rival, Ursuline, 37-14. We have one more game against Columbus Watterson and then we start the play-offs.

"I think we lost the No. 1 seed based on our computer points. I'm not sure how it happened, but we've played pretty good schedule. I think we have play-off games on Saturdays so hopefully we'll make it five games into the play-offs. If that happens I'll end up taking my official visit on December 7, for the banquet weekend."

For the season Dan has approximately 1,000 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns, 700 passing yards with eight passing touchdowns. He's returned two punts for touchdowns and added four interceptions from his safety position.
