Commitment Round-up

IrishEyes.com takes a look at how the Notre Dame commitments faired in their weekend games.

Darius Fleming - St. Rita High School, Chicago. Ill.
St. Rita is out of the state playoffs, but has a chance to work it's way into the Prep Bowl. The Mustangs got off to a good start last weekend as they dominated a Fenwick, 35-18. With the win St. Rita moves to 8-4. St Rita will get a chance to avenge an early season loss to conference rival Loyola on Saturday. Loyola shocked St. Rita in their first meeting of the season, 28-17.
Sean Cwynar - Marian Central Catholic, Woodstock, Ill.
Sean Cwynar and Marian Central Catholic High School (9-2) won an exciting 34-27 back and forth battle against Nazareth Academy (LaGrange Park, Ill.) Nazareth started the game with a 13-0 ;lead only to see Marian Central fight back and take a 20-13 lead. Nazareth worked it's way back to take a 27-20 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. It was Marian Central's quarterback Jon Budmayr that took his team on his back and led the Hurricanes to two touchdowns in the final mintues to secure the win. Saturday Marian Central will take on Morris in a semifianl game.

 

Steven Filer - Mt Carmel High School, Chicago. Ill.
Steve Filer and Mount Carmel High School (12-0) beat Maine South 21-14 to advance in the Illinois state playoffs. The Caravan found it's way out to a 21-7 lead and held on as Maine South made a late rush. On Saturday, Mt. Carmel will take on Glenbard North in a 8A state semifinal game.

 

Braxston Cave - Penn High School. Mishawaka Ind.
Penn High School (12-1) found its season come to an end with a a disappointing 21-20 loss to Merrillville (Ind.) For the first time all season, Braxston Cave played offensive guard and it helped Penn rush for nearly 300 yards in the first half. Penn dominated much of the game as the Kingsmen continually pounded the ball over Cave's side of the line. Penn was up 20-7, in the second quarterback, but couldn't hold on as Merrillville's defense stiffened in the second half.
Joseph Fauria - Crespi Carmelite High School
Joseph Fauria and Crespi Carmelite High School (8-2) took the conference title with a 23-3 victory over Notre Dame High School. Fauria put the first points on the board for Crespi with a 18-yard touchdown catch. That would be all that Crespi needed as Notre Dame struggled to move the ball on offnse. This weekend Crespi will open the playoffs against Millikan (Long Beach).
Dayne Crist / Anthony McDonald - Notre Dame High School, Sherman Oaks, Calif.

Notre Dame (8-2) dropped their final regular season game to Crespi. Notre Dame was without Crist for nearly the entire game. Early in the first quarter Crist took two shots to the head on one play and was forced to leave the game. Without Crist, the Notre Dame offense had a tough time moving the ball and never really challenged Crespi. Anthony McDonald played well on both sides on the ball, and the Notre Dame defense held its own for much of the game, but eventually couldn't hold Crespi off. Notre Dame will meet Newport Harbor (Newport Beach) this Friday in a first round playoff game.


 
Omar Hunter - Buford High School, (Ga.)
Omar Hunter and Buford High School (10-0) registered their third consecutive shutout and fourth shutout of the season, as the Wolves beat Lovett (Atlanta) 21-0. Lovett had been averaging 34 points a game, but the Buford defense was able to hold Lovett to just 34 yards on the night. The win gave Buford its seventh consecutive region championship. Buford opens the playoffs this Friday against Washington-Wilkes (Washington,Ga.)
Jamoris Slaughter - Tucker High School (Tucker, Ga.)
Tucker High School moved to 10-0 with a 38-8 win over Cedar Grove (Ellenwood, Ga.). Tucker's first round playoff game will be against Clarke Central (Athens).
Hafis Williams - Elizabeth High School (N.J.)
Hafis Williams and Elizabeth High School lost a first round playoff game 20-0 to Hunterdon Central (Flemington, N.J.)  The loss left Elizabeth's final record at 5-4.
Jonas Gray - Detroit Country Day, Beverly Hills (Mich.)
Jonas Gray and Detroit Country Day now stands at 10-2 with a 24-6 win over Milan. Gray led Country Day to the win with a 167-yard, two touchdown performance. On Saturday, Country Day will face Zeeland West in a state semifinal game.
Michael Floyd - Cretin Derham Hall (St. Paul Minn.)
Michael Floyd and Cretin Derham Hall (12-0) moved a step closer to a state title as they beat Lakeville North, 26-18 Cretin Derham Hall jumped out to a 26-3 lead, but couldn't get much done offensively in the second half. The Raiders had to fend out a late push by Lakeville in order to move get a chance to play in the semifinals. Flloyd was held to 3 catches for 37 yard and one touchdown. Floyd's lone score came on a 15-yard reception. With the win Cretin Derham Hall plays Brainerd this Thursday in the Metrodome.
John Goodman - Bishop Dwenger, Ft. Wayne Ind.
John Goodman had a huge night as Bishop Dwenger High School 13-0 rolled over Jay County (Portland, Ind.), 42-14. Goodman finished the night passing 8-13 for 192 yards and three touchdown. Goodman also ran the ball five times for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Bishop Dwenger will face Lowell in a state semifinal game on Friday.
 
Robert Blanton - Butler High School, Matthews, N.C.
Robert Blanton and Butler High School 10-2 beat Lumberton 49-6 in the first round of the playoffs. Independence for the second time in three weeks. Butler won the regular season meeting in dramatic fashion with a 21-20 victory.
 
Dan McCarthy - Cardinal Mooney High School, Youngstown, Ohio
Dan McCarthy and Cardinal Mooney High School (12-0) continue to churn up opponents for it's 27th consecutive win. This past weekend they made it look easy, with a convincing 28-7 second round playoff win against St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron). Normally it is the Mooney offense that leads the way, but last weekend it was the defense, that gave Mooney a the edge by continually providing the offense with a short field to negotiate. Cardinal Mooney will play Steubenville this Saturday. 
Michael Golic- Northwest Catholic
Michael Golic Jr. Northwest Catholic 7-2 third consecutive shutout and fourth shutout of the season as Northwest beat East Catholic (Manchester) 28-0. Northwest Catholic has a bye week and then will take on Plainville. 
Lane Clelland - Mc Donogh
Mc Donogh School lost their final regular season game to Gilman (Baltimore) 21-14. The loss drops McDonogh to 6-4 on the season.
Ethan Johnson - Lincoln High School (Portland, Ore.)
Ethan Johnson sat out of competition as Lincoln High School (5-5) with a 55-28 first round playoff win over Roseburg. Lincoln moves on to play Douglas this Friday.
Brandon Newman - Pleasure Ridge Park (Louisville, Kent.)
Brandon Newman and Pleasure Ridge Park High School (4-7) lost a heart-breaking first round playoff game 21-20 to one of the states top teams DuPont Manual (Louisville)
Kyle Rudolph - Elder High School, Cincinnati, Ohio
Elder High School finished their season at(7-4)
David Posluszny - Hopewell High School (Aliquippa Pa.) (
Hopewell High School finished the season 4-5.
