Jones Sets Irish Official

Datone Jones is booked for January. The four-star defensive end from Compton, Calif., and soft-verbal commit to UCLA, will travel to Oregon the weekend of the 12th. He'll head to Arizona State the following weekend. Last Thursday night, he confirmed plans with Notre Dame assistant coach Brian Polian, to check out South Bend the weekend of the 26th.

All three official visits will be Jones first time on those respective campuses.

"That's like my only opening, so I have to go that weekend," Datone Jones said of his Notre Dame official. He took a trip to Colorado and "had a good time," last weekend. "I was looking at the calendar, and that was the only time I could come in."

This past fall, the 6-foot-4, 233-pound Jones had 110 tackles, 36 of those coming for loss, including 13 sacks, helping Compton High to a 8-3 record. A couple weeks ago, Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, defensive coordinator Corwin Brown and Polian, all made trips by the school.

Jones has been regularly keeping in touch with Polian, and talked with Brown on the phone last week.

"He was telling me where I would fit in with their defense," Jones said.

Jones said he is still planning on announcing his college decision live on FSN on National Signing Day.

UCLA is doing what they can to keep Jones onboard after the recent dismissal of head coach Karl Dorrell.

"Right now, they're trying to bring in a new coach," Jones said. "(Defensive coordinator) DeWayne Walker may get it. They're saying just hold on and be patient with them. I talk to (defensive line) coach (Todd) Howard and coach Walker, and basically the whole (remaining) staff." Top Stories
