Martin Gets the Call

Redford, Mich. defensive tackle prospect Mike Martin got a phone call today and an offer he had been waiting for. What did the 6-foot-1, 285-pound four-star prospect think of his offer from Notre Dame?

"I'm really excited. I just got a phone call from coach Corwin Brown and he told me they'd be offering me an official scholarship to Notre Dame," said Mike Martin. "I haven't spoken to coach Weis yet because he's in Puerto Rico, but I'm supposed to call him real soon. I'll be taking a visit to Notre Dame sometime in January. I'm just not sure when I plan to do that."

Martin had been hoping for an offer from the Irish earlier this year, but that didn't happen.

"I liked them early in the process," Martin said of the Irish. "I went to their camp last year and I was really impressed with their camp and their staff. I am kind of disappointed that it came so late, but I'm glad it did. I just want to go up there and see what I think of it."

The Catholic Central high school star has been committed to Michigan since the summer, but the Michigan coaching changes has opened just a crack for the Irish so far.

"I'm still 100 percent committed to Michigan," Martin said. "Notre Dame will be the only school I'll visit. I've already informed the staff that I plan to visit there. I just feel I owe it to myself to go check out Notre Dame and make sure Michigan is the place for me."

One thing in the Wolverine's favor is the 2008 recruiting class.

"I'm real tight with all those guys," he said of the other prospects committed to Michigan. "I don't know the guys at Notre Dame other than Jonas Gray. I talk to Jonas all the time, but he's really the only guy I know there."

When will Martin visit South Bend?

"I'm not really sure," he said. "I'm wrestling right now, so that makes it kind of hard. I'll have to find a time when my team won't need me as much and I'll make a visit down there."
