Then his cell phone rang.
"I got a call from my head coach," Marlon Brown said. "He said, I have a very important message to tell you. He was like, you have an offer. I was like who? He said Notre Dame.
"Then, I was like, wow."
Irish offensive coordinator Michael Haywood made the trip to Memphis, Tenn. to offer Brown. Notre Dame became the third school this week to extend Brown a full-ride, joining Texas Tech and Miami. Brown now has 10 offers, with the others coming from Ole Miss, Tennessee, Auburn, Colorado, Clemson, Stanford and Ohio State.
"Coach Haywood came by and dropped off the papers for Marlon," Harding Academy head coach Ryan Derrick said. "We sat around in my office for a couple hours shooting the breeze. He's an easy guy to talk to. It's easy to see why he's good at what he does."
This past season, Brown had 41 receptions for 861 yards and six touchdowns. He also had 58 carries for 629 yards and 10 more scores.
Brown hopes to play both football and basketball on the next level, and is totally open as far as recruiting goes right now. He is getting a lot of interest from major-college programs, but is still waiting on his first basketball offer.
Brown said he is going to try and visit Notre Dame during the spring or summer.
"I like the heritage and the tradition of Notre Dame," Brown said. He has a 3.5 GPA.
"I knew when I gave (the written offer from Notre Dame) to him, I could tell he was excited," Derrick said. "You could see it in him. He's a quiet kid, but you could see the excitement in him."
Brown had 17 points in a win last night.
