Richardson on Irish Radar

Cornerback won't be a huge need for the Irish in 2008, but one can never have enough good corner prospects. Knowing this the Irish coaching staff is combing the country looking for top corner prospects who are interested. They've found one in South Carolina native Riyahd Richardson.

James F. Byrnes high school star Riyahd Richardson is starting to get a lot of attention from a number of top schools including Notre Dame.

"I don't have any offers yet," Richardson said. "I think I'll get some soon. Notre Dame, Rutgers and Georgia Tech are the three schools that have been keeping in touch with me the most."

The 5-foot-9, 165-pound corner had a solid junior season, and a lot of schools are starting to take notice.

"I had 85 tackles, six interceptions, 17 pass breakups, and 33 lockdowns last year," Richardson said. "I think I'm pretty good in coverage, but I love to come up and make the hit."

Irish defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Corwin Brown has also been impressed with Richardson's skills.

"I've spoke with coach Brown," he said. "He sends me e-mails all the time, and I've spoken with him on the phone. He said I have great instincts, and that's something he can't teach. He said he wanted me to send my transcripts up there, and he wants me to come up for a visit.

"I like coach Brown a lot. He's pretty cool. I think I'm going to go up there over my spring break. I don't know much about Notre Dame. I think it's a Catholic school. I also heard it's pretty cold up there, so we'll have to see how I like it."

The Duncan, S.C. native said he's not certain on his core g.p.a. at this time.

"I don't know what it is," he said. "I have a 2.9 overall, but I'm not sure on the other. I took the SAT on March 3rd. I haven't gotten a score back yet. I think that may be why I don't have offers at this point."

Other schools are also on Richardson's radar at this particular time.

"I like Rutgers, Notre Dame, South Carolina, North Carolina, Boston College…..Virginia Tech and Kansas have been sending me mail."

At this time Richardson doesn't plan on making any decisions any time soon.

"I'm going to take my visits in January I think," he said when asked if he might decide early. "I want to check out some schools and get a feel for them first. It's pretty early right now, and I don't really have a list at this point."
