Oklahoma sent quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel out to see the Mission Viejo (Calif.) High standout throw the rock around. Boston College is coming out. So is UCLA, Boise State, Texas Tech and Notre Dame.
With the three quarterback prospects the Irish previously offered looking elsewhere, the coaching staff is trying to figure out what top prospect they want to offer next. Allan Bridgford is in the mix with a few other candidates.
"Yeah definitely," Bridgford stated of his eagerness to show off his arm. "I have all those schools and dates circled, but when a school like Notre Dame comes out to watch you, you're going to show up."
Bridgford shows up on Friday nights also.
During his junior season, Bridgford threw for 2,508 yards and 22 touchdowns with a 62 percent completion percentage. He also rushed for a pair of touchdowns.
Arizona, Arizona State, Texas Tech and Stanford have offered. Besides the schools listed above, UCLA, California and Colorado are showing interest. The 6-foot-3 ½, 215-pound signal caller has a preliminary top six favorites of Notre Dame, Arizona State, Boston College, the Bears, Texas Tech and the Bruins.
"They just got into the swing of things with the new coaches," Bridgford said of a possible UCLA offer. "They want to check out all their options before they make any quick decisions, which I agree with. Seems like things are going pretty well with them."
Sounds like Heupel was impressed with what he saw from Bridgford.
"They liked me a lot," Bridgford said. "They said they were going to give me a call pretty soon. My coach said they were pretty interested and liked how looked.
"Boston College told me the only thing keeping them from offering me, is they want to meet their quarterbacks in person first, and that's a good thing.
"Notre Dame just moves slower than most schools. I'm sure they're just interested in seeming me throw before doing anything. The same with UCLA."
If Bridgford throws like he did at a Nike Combine last weekend, he is going to give Polian and the rest of the Irish staff a lot to think about. Bridgford shared combine MVP honors with scout.com's top recruit and USC verbal commit Matt Barkley.
"I didn't throw my best, but I threw pretty well," Bridgford said. He has May visits set up to see Arizona State, California and UCLA, and has camped at Notre Dame before. "Well enough to be MVP with Matt Barkley.
"We know each other pretty well, known each other since seventh grade so we're pretty good friends."
And possibly soon, with the programs looking at Bridgford, rivals on the college football field.
