A Pleasant Surprise

When Pat Muldoon and his mother arrived on Notre Dame's campus this morning, the four-star defensive end from Cincinnati, Ohio was given a rundown of the day's itinerary. Muldoon was shocked to hear that one coach returned from his vacation early just to meet with him.

That was head coach Charlie Weis.

Pat Muldoon originally thought the Irish coach wouldn't be around.

"It's pretty good to know they want me that bad," Muldoon said, later adding that was the most impressive part of the trip.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Muldoon is sporting a bevy of scholarship offers from top-notch programs all over the country. Ohio State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Stanford and Louisville are a few of the many that have stepped to the table with a free ride.

Weis let Muldoon and his Mom know what Notre Dame was all about. The three conversed for about an hour.

"At first it started with chit chat about his vacation and family," Muldoon said. "Then he gave me his background and where they plan on going. He let me ask him some questions, and he gave some general thoughts about Notre Dame football.

"I had most of my questions answered earlier in the day.

"He said that he likes that I'm a versatile player. He sees me at an end or inside."

This past season, Muldoon helped lead St. Xavier to a state championship with 75 tackles, 12 sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles.

This was Muldoon's first time on the Notre Dame campus since he attended a game in eighth grade. He doesn't remember much from that afternoon, but got a great feel for the South Bend school on Saturday.

"I was surprised about everything, shocked." Muldoon stated when asked if he was blown away.

"The trip was really good. We went and saw all the facilities, toured the campus. Talked with the d-line coach (Jappy Oliver), talked with coach (Jon) Tenuta, coach (Corwin) Brown, coach Weis, pretty much everyone. We also talked to the strength coach and some academic advisors, and I learned everything there is to learn about Notre Dame."

"I'm definitely still considering them. I'm still going to take a couple more visits this month and try and narrow down my list further."

Muldoon hopes to make a decision before his senior season. He will check out Boston College next week, and visit Virginia and Virginia Tech next month.

Coach Brown and coach Tenuta are the main two recruiting Muldoon. But since the Irish offered him earlier this month, Muldoon has also heard from Dan Fox and Kyle Rudolph.

"The day after Notre Dame offered, he was texting me," Muldoon said of Rudolph, the five-star tight end who will be an Irish freshman this fall. "I've talked to him a couple times.

"I've been talking to Dan Fox a decent amount. We talk on the phone, I think the day he committed, and we've been texting each other. We play St. Ignatius (where Fox plays) every year.

"St. Ignatius and St. X are similar schools, catholic schools, good football programs, where academics come first. He thinks it would be an easier transition into Notre Dame. He said when he visited there, he knew he was going there and everything blew him away."

Notre Dame is hoping Muldoon will eventually realize the same thing.
