Brey Gets Extension
Mike Brey, who will begin his ninth year as head coach of the Irish this season, has won back-to-back Big East Coach of the Year awards and has a 167-86 career record at Notre Dame. "As his peers have acknowledged by selecting him coach of the year the past two seasons, Mike has built one of the top men's basketball programs in the BIG EAST Conference," said Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., Notre Dame's president. "His quiet confidence and class are a perfect fit for Notre Dame, and I am sure that we'll enjoy still more success in coming years." Brey led the Irish to a 25-8 record last season, the most wins for a Notre Dame team since 1973-74, and to a fifth-seed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. The 2007-08 season was the second straight season that Notre Dame finished unbeaten at home and currently owns a 37-game win streak at the Joyce center. IrishEyes expects to reach Brey later tonight for comments.
