Two Birds, One Stone

Notre Dame's junior day on Saturday served two major purposes for five-star offensive tackle and Irish verbal commit Christian Lombard.

The class-of-2010 standout from Wm Fremd High in Palatine, Ill., got to meet Notre Dame's new offensive line coach Frank Verducci. But maybe more importantly, the 6-foot-5, 290-pound Lombard got show his mother the South Bend campus for the first time.

"She likes it a lot," Lombard said. He verbally committed to Notre Dame on Jan. 3rd in San Antonio at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. "She got to see the grotto and everything, and she thought that was probably the best thing. She thinks it's a beautiful campus."

Lombard came with both of his parents, and his mother was meeting the coaching staff for the first time as well.

"She said they're all genuine guys and gentlemen."

Lombard was anxious to meet with Verducci.

"Just getting to talk to him, he was real impressive and everything," Lombard explained. "Just listening to what he said, I think he's going to get the program back to where it needs to be run-game wise.

"He has a great vision."

Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis envisions his first verbal commit in next year's class helping pull in other talented players. Weis and Lombard spent a lot of time talking on Saturday as well.

"Coach Weis was just telling me about being the point man, leading this recruiting class, and talking to guys and everything.

"That's not really my personality, but I know it's needed and I'm willing to do that role." Top Stories
