Toledo hit first, but Notre Dame struck last as the Irish defeated the Rockets 11-7 at Frank Eck Stadium on Wednesday night.
The win improves Notre Dame to 16-10 while Toledo drops to 10-12.
David Casey led the Irish offense with three hits and four RBI while Jeremy Barnes smacked his fifth home run of the season and knocked in three for Notre Dame. Golden Tate and A.J. Pollock each scored three times while David Mills and Greg Sherry each had a pair of hits.
Ryan Richter earned his third win of the season with four innings of solid relief after Todd Miller and Sam Elam were tagged for six runs in four innings combined.
Toledo opened the game with three runs in the top of the first and when Notre Dame answered with two runs of its own, the Rockets added another in the third to take a 4-2 advantage.
Even when the Irish took a 5-4 lead on Barnes' two-run homer in the third, Toledo scored two more to regain the lead. But Notre Dame tied the game on a Pollock RBI single in the fifth before a two-run single from Mills gave the Irish an 8-6 lead in the sixth.
Toledo drew closer with a run in the seventh, but the Irish scored three unearned runs in their half of the inning which included a two-run single from Casey to take an 11-7 lead. Richter retired Toledo in order in the eighth before Barnes sat the Rockets down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Notre Dame returns to conference play with a three-game set with Villanova at Frank Eck Stadium this weekend. The series opener is scheduled for 5:05 on Friday.
