Lombard Is Staying Busy

Christian Lombard is one of three juniors that have committed to play for the Irish. The standout from William Fremd High School (Palatine, Ill.) is Scout.com's No. 1 rated offensive guard.

Christian Lombard (6-foot-5, 280 pounds) has his sites set on being prepared to compete for playing time when he reports to Notre Dame, but that's still over a year away. Until then, Lombard is focused on another goal.

"Right now I'm focusing on track and getting ready for the season," Lombard explained. "I throw shot and discuss. I'm doing well right now. I'm mainly focusing on the discus. I think I have a pretty good chance to go down to state. I missed qualifying by seven inches last year, so hopefully I'll make it this year."

As confident as he is in his ability to sling the discus, Lombard is certain he'll be comfortable with his future position coach Frank Verducci. Lombard got good look at Notre Dame's new offensive line coach this spring.

"I really like him" Lombard replied when asked about his future coach. "I was there (Notre Dame) for the spring game, but I think I'll go over there for one of the one-day camps, so I can workout with coach Verducci. He and coach Ianello actually came over and watched one of my meets a couple weeks ago.

"In the spring game the offensive line showed a lot of improvement. They ran the ball very well. I saw one of the spring practices. I really like the way (Verducci) coaches. He treats each guy differently and molds his approach to (the player). He'll get in their ear a little more and he really pushes guys. Being an NFL guy he knows what it takes."
