Scarlett Is One Of The Best In The West

Brennan Scarlett is one of the top defensive ends on the West Coast and he's starting to rack up scholarship offers. The junior from Central Catholic High School (Portland, Ore.) has heard from the Irish and he's interested in learning more about the Notre Dame football program.

Notre Dame signed Portland native Ethan Johnson in 2008, when he was ranked as one of the top defensive ends in the country. Brennan Scarlett (6-foot-5, 245-pounds) is starting to receive a lot of attention from the top programs in the country and the Irish have come calling.

"They faxed me a letter that said they were going to offer me a scholarship," Scarlett responded when asked if Notre Dame had been in contact with him. "Coach Hart sent me a letter saying that he's looking forward to getting in touch with me and meeting me and all that stuff. I haven't had a chance to call him or be in any other kind of contact. The letter was nice though.

"It would have to say my interest is high. It's a great program from what I know and what I've heard. I know their tradition. I know that it's a program with a rich history and that there's a lot of pride in the program. Other than that not too much I guess. But just that alone, I'd like to find out some more. I'll definitely keep in touch."

Along with the Irish, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, and Cal have extended scholarship offers to Scarlett. With his size, speed and athletic ability, Brennan's list of suitors should continue to grow.

"Coaches like my size," Scarlett said. "I'm pretty quick off the line and my speed is not bad. I run track too, so that kind of helps. Other than that I play a lot of sports, so I guess the athletic ability comes in to play too.

"I run the 200 and 400 mostly this year. I ran 55.00 400 this year, and in the 200, I ran in 23.9."

Scarlett hasn't been sitting around waiting for schools to discover him, he has already participated in several summer camps, and he has plans to make several addition trips.

"I was down at the USC camp this summer," Brennan explained. "I had an unofficial visit to UCLA while I was down there. They were supposed to offer me on (September 1), is what I thought was going to happen, but they never did. I've been to Oregon and Oregon State a couple times. Washington, I was there for a camp too.

"I'd like to get to some games if I'm open and I‘m able to attend. My dad went to BYU. We have a bye-week next week, so he's taking me down to the BYU vs. Florida State game. I'm probably going to go to the Oregon/USC game. It's probably going to be a big game. So I'll probably go down there.

"I'm hoping to go to the Army offensive and defensive line combine being in San Antonio," he said. "But I'd have to receive an invitation for that. But I hear it's a good thing."
