Irish impress Cooper

Corey Cooper is still committed to Illinois, but that isn't going to keep the standout athlete of Proviso East (Maywood, Ill.) from taking a look at several other schools. Cooper made his first official visit to Notre Dame last weekend and the Irish made a big impact on him.

Corey Cooper (6-foot-2, 195-pounds) was one of a number of highly rated recruits in town for Notre Dame's showdown with USC. The Irish may not have won on the field, but their efforts may eventually help them with the recruits off the field.

"It was a good game and I enjoyed myself," Cooper responded when asked about his visit. "It was a great atmosphere. Their fans were all into it and they even recognize recruits. There were so many people there supporting their school. Everything was perfect about the visit.

"All the players were cool. It seemed like they bonded well and they were all together. It showed on the field. Everything was real cool."

Cooper had Proviso East graduate Sergio Brown host him while he was on campus.

"(Brown) said positive things about the school," Cooper explained. "We went out after the game and we had a good time. I met all the other recruits and they were all cool.

"I talked to coach Ianello, coach Brown and coach Weis. I'm being recruited by coach Ianello for offense and coach Brown for defense. They told me that I could come in and wherever I can get on the field fastest, is the position I'll play.

"Coach Weis just about all the positives of going to Notre Dame and what it means to graduate from Notre Dame."

Cooper walked away from Notre Dame with a very good impression, but he isn't going to change his commitment status as of yet.

"I'm still committed to Illinois, but I haven't made a final decision," Cooper said. "I'll make that on signing day.

"I don't have anything else planned right now, but I'm going to go to Illinois, Arizona and Tennessee. I'm trying to look at the big picture and see what is best for me." Top Stories
