Rock talks ND

The Notre Dame coaching staff continues to get a jump on the 2011 recruiting class. Junior defensive end Chris Rock from St. Francis DeSales High School (Columbus, Ohio) made an unofficial visit to Notre Dame for the USC game a couple weeks ago and he was impressed with what Notre Dame had to offer.

Although Notre Dame offered Chris Rock (6-foot-4.5, 245-pounds) a scholarship in September, the junior defensive end didn't know much about the school. Nonetheless, Rock was interested enough to make a trip to South Bend a couple weeks ago to watch the Irish take on USC.

"It was really good, I liked it a lot," Rock responded when asked about his trip to Notre Dame. "You could tell that there was a lot of tradition. We went there and hung out in the recruiting room for a while, and then we walked to the stadium from mass. That was really cool with all the fans out there cheering for them. It was just really fun to be at.

"I really didn't have any expectations, because I really hadn't been there and heard that much about it. The atmosphere was awesome though, especially since they were playing a big game. The fans are crazy, and I liked the coaches, so it was fun.

"I got a little bit of time to talk to the coaches," he said. "I talked to the defensive line coach and coach Tenuta. I liked them a lot. They were really nice and easy to talk to. They seemed like really fun guys too."

Although Notre Dame dropped a tight ball game to USC, Rock was impressed with the way the Irish competed.

"I thought they played really hard, and I thought they should have won," Rock said. "I was really impressed with that. USC comes in and you play your hardest and you try to win and they came really close, so I was impressed."

Living in the shadow of ‘The Horseshoe' in Columbus, Rock is very familiar with the atmosphere surrounding an Ohio State Buckeye home game, and the differences compared to Notre Dame were pretty apparent to him.

"It's definitely different," Rock explained. "It's different in a good way though. I don't know how to explain it, just everything was different. The campus was different. It was really nice. The college gameday experience was good at Notre Dame, with all the people that were there. It was as good as any Ohio State gameday I'm sure."

Rock has plenty of schools other knocking on his door. He currently holds scholarship offers from Notre Dame, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Duke Stanford and Michigan. Chris is interested in making a return trip to Notre Dame, but he's also hoping to get to other schools.

"I'll probably wait for a junior day," Rock responded when asked if he planned to make another visit to Notre Dame. "I'd definitely like to go back. I liked it a lot. I'd like to learn more and see more too.

"I want to go to a Cincinnati game and I want to make it out to all the places that have offered me. But there is only so much time and we're going into the playoffs, but I definitely want to take some more if I can."
