Toney Hurd: Under Armor Game

A couple weeks ago Toney Hurd Jr. was committed to Notre Dame, but after the coaching shake-up in South Bend, Hurd decided to shake things up himself. The standout defensive back from Marshall High School (Missouri City, Texas) is looking for a new team and his announcement will come this Saturday during the Under Armor All America Game.

Toney Hurd Jr.(5-foot-9, 185-pounds) struggled early during the 1-on-1 portion of Wednesday's Under Armor All America practice, but he really seemed to come on as the day progressed. He's small, but rocked up. He can be physical, but at times he struggled staying contact with the wide receivers. He did have a great interception in the 7-on-7s. He had his guy covered down the sideline, pealed off his receiver and made a diving interception on a ball thrown over the head of the quarterbacks intended target.

The first thing that stood out to me was that Toney was a bit too upright in his backpedal, with his weight forward. He needs to sit down and get his backside over the tea kettle. Toney isn't as smooth in transitioning from his back pedal as some of the other guys out there, but he certainly isn't stiff. Based on the catch he made on the interception, he appears to have very good hands.

His team didn't really work on press coverage during the 1-on-1s or the scrimmage, so I didn't get to see his ability to jam the receivers at the line of scrimmage. He is physical though. He will get his body into the receiver and ride his off his route. He seemed more than willing to put his helmet on people.

I don't know what his true 40-time is, but football speed appeared to be very good. I saw him get turned around a couple times, and he showed the ability to make up ground on the receiver.

He's a little raw, but he's a football player and I'd take him on my team any day. He did improve as the day went on, so I expect him to continue that trend as the week progresses. If the Aggies are his choice come Saturday, the folks in College Station will be getting a good one. Top Stories
