Nichols In South Bend

Tate Nichols from Ryle High School (Union, Ky.) has been committed to Stanford since April, but as signing day nears, he's starting to reconsider that commitment. Tate has been interested in the Irish, and he got the opportunity make a trip to South Bend to see the Notre Dame program on Friday.

Tate Nichols (6-foot-7, 270-pounds) didn't think he'd be in this position back when he committed to the Stanford Cardinal, but as the reality of moving across the country draws nearer, he's becoming more uncertain about the distance between his hometown and Palo Alto, Calif.

"With me and Stanford, I'd still consider myself a soft verbal," Nichols said. "We're kind of starting to look around a little, because signing day is getting closer, and the whole distance thing is starting to become a factor, and I didn't think that it would be when I committed."

Although Notre Dame is down the road, it is a car ride away from Union, Ky. Notre Dame invited Tate to make the trip on Friday and he explained his interest in the Irish football program.

"Growing up relatively close to campus, we're about five hours away," Nichols said. "I've been able to watch their games growing up. I know Notre Dame has a great reputation for being a great academic school. I'm Catholic, and this is the main Catholic school in the country. The tradition is just incredible there. We're just interested in getting to campus and learning more.

"I really didn't know a lot of people on (the Notre Dame) staff. I've met and talked to coach Kelly when he offered me at Cincinnati, but I don't many of his assistants. Another great thing about getting up to Notre Dame is that I'll get a chance to meet and interact with all of his assistants.

"The biggest thing is that we just want to get up on campus and see things,' he explained. "Not necessarily take an official visit, but just get a feel for the campus itself, possibly interact with some of the players on the team. We can also get a feel for the coaching staff."

Notre Dame hasn't offered Nichols a scholarship yet, but that could be coming soon. If the Irish wait too long they may find the list of schools they're competing with has grown.

"Kentucky contacted me again his (Friday) morning and they're going to come by my school on Tuesday," he said. "I have an official and in-home visit set up with Illinois next weekend. Cincinnati also has expressed interest in me and said that my scholarship offer from them is still on the table."

Although has Tate listed as a tight end, he will likely evolve into an offensive tackle.

"At this point offensive tackle is what I'm thinking," Nichols responded when asked which position he was being recruited to play. "I'm open to anything at this point, so we're just going to play it by ear and see how this visit turns out and then I think we'll have a better idea of where they want me to play." Top Stories
