Irish Holding Strong

Notre Dame still has its eyes on one of the top prospects in the country, Ego Ferguson from Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham ,Va.) The standout defensive lineman just returned from an official visit to Florida State and he'll take one more official visit before heading to New York to announce his decision.

Ego Ferguson ( 6-foot-4, 270-pounds) lived just over three hours from the Florida State campus when he was younger, so his recent official visit to Tallahassee, Fla. was something he had looked forward to making. His father, Ego, enjoyed the trip, but was more impressed with the staff at Florida State.

"It was a good trip," the elder Ferguson remarked. "I didn't realize that coach Jimbo fisher was from the Nick Saban coaching tree. That's what I learned through the visit and what I liked about it. What J.R. liked about it was that it was home. He actually met one of his middle school classmates, while he was down there. It was kind of unique to see some of the guys that he grew up with down there."

After nearly being dropped from the race, Notre Dame has found new life in the recruitment of Ego. The Irish made an impressive in-home visit last week, and according to Mr. Ferguson, the Irish will be back again this week.

"I just talked with coach Elston and Dave Peloquin," Mr. Ferguson said. "They're flying down to watch one of his basketball games, so they're still in the mix. What has remained consistent with Notre Dame is that they're the one school that is still recruiting him, that has him playing that "Wildcat' position on defense; that standup, outside guy, instead of being a rush end. I think the way Notre Dame is planning to utilize him has made a big difference."

In addition to Florida State and Notre Dame, his is still considering Cal, LSU and Miami. Rumors have been swirling that Ego Sr., has strong connections to the coaching staffs at both Miami and LSU. Although there is silver of truth behind the reports that he knows Miami head coach Randy Shannon, Mr. Ferguson clarified that there isn't much to their relationship.

"I read that story," Ego sr. said. "We played in the same conference when we were in high school, but I didn't know him, because he went to a different school. I knew guys that he knew, but it wasn't like we knew each other.

"The LSU situation is very similar. The defensive line coach, coach Haley, he and I played in the same conference together as well, but I didn't know him either."

Ego will make his last official visit to Miami this weekend, and shortly after that he'll head up to New York to make his announcement.
