Irish Waiting to Hear from Eight

Signing Day is here and unlike most years, there is a large group of prospects that Notre Dame is waiting to hear from. Heading into the day Notre Dame has 21 commitments, and at least eight players Notre Dame is still involved will be making their announcement today.

Corey Cooper, the safety out of Proviso East High School (Ill.) committed to Illinois over a year ago, and has since been looking for a reason to pick another school. Notre Dame really had fallen off with Cooper over the past couple weeks, and despite some glowing comments by Cooper recently, the Irish have been on the outside looking in. Expect Cooper to select Nebraska over Illinois today.

Jeremy Ioane is from the same high school in Hawaii that produced Roby Toma and Manti Te'o. Notre Dame got into the race late, but was able to get Ioane to take an official visit to Notre Dame last weekend. With the Irish going up against Washington and Boise State, you have to like Notre Dame's chances.

Defensive end, Kona Schwenke is another Hawaiian that Notre Dame contacted late in the recruiting game. He had been committed to BYU, but once the BYU coaches heard that he was taking a visit to Notre Dame, they pulled his offer. It's likely BYU would still take his commitment if he made the call to them, but it appears that Kona is going to take a different direction. There had been some discussion of pushing his decision back so that he could take additional visits, but my guess is that Kona will sign with the Irish today.

Matt James might be the most important prospect on the board, because Notre Dame only has two offensive linemen in this class. James knows the Notre Dame coaches very well from when they were at Cincinnati, but Ohio State is very difficult to turn down. Today Notre Dame wins that battle and James signs with the Irish.

Seantrel Henderson; It would be a monster signing for Notre Dame to land not only the top lineman in the country, but also the top overall player. Henderson attends Cretin-Derham Hall, a feeder school for Notre Dame, but today Henderson opts for one of their rivals…USC.

Ego Ferguson had nearly eliminated Notre Dame from his list of schools a couple weeks ago, but an impressive in-home visit by Brian Kelly and his staff, made Ego reconsider. The ND staff continued to recruit Ego well and made up considerable ground over the past two weeks… unfortunately I think it was enough and Ferguson picks LSU over ND, Cal and Miami.

Christian Jones is another bit-time defender that the Notre Dame defense could really use. Notre Dame did an outstanding job of recruiting Jones and while many thought that he was a lock for Florida State, the Irish hung around. In the end, I don't think the new Notre Dame staff had enough time to build a relationship to get Jones from the Seminoles.

Although Brian Kelly made an interesting pitch to Dietrich Riley, I don't think Riley ever was going to leave the West Coast. Riley signs with UCLA. Top Stories
