Alex Welch (6-foot-5, 225-pounds) Elder High School, Cincinnati, Ohio:

Brian Kelly's comments : "He's a pretty good player. Has the ability to get under coverage. He's a very, very skilled player and he's tough, a great competitor. We're very excited to have Alex in the program. He's really savvy, an outstanding tight end. It's very difficult to defend him and he's got the size…he's going to be really big. He does a great job of finishing off blocks."

Dave Berk of comments: The first thing you'll learn about Alex is his toughness on the field. When Brian Kelly talks about RKG's all you have to do is look at Welch and you'll see what he's talking about.

Good size with the willingness to do the small things makes Welch the type of guy Kelly will soon be looking towards to make plays. Alex Welch is a complete player who is still growing and will excel under Paul Longo strength program.

While Irish fans have seen the mismatches Kyle Rudolph can cause Welch is more of a traditional tight end who will block along the line at a high level and who can come off the line and release into the flat or go across the middle of the field to catch a pass and get YAC (yards after the catch).
