Irish Under Consideration

Notre Dame is trying to make a recruiting push into Texas and one of the prospects that Brian Kelly has identified is Nathan Hughes of Klein Oak High School (Spring, Texas). Hughes is the No. 14 ranked defensive end in the country by and he's sitting on 19 scholarship offers.

It didn't take long for the Notre Dame coaching staff to determine whether they wanted to offer Nathan Hughes (6-foot-6, 260-poiunds) a scholarship. Shortly after his head coach sent the Notre Dame staff Hughes' film the Irish pulled the trigger.

"The coaches emailed me, so I called them," Hughes recalled. "I talked to coach Cooks and the defensive line coach, coach Elston. I think they were talking to my coach about me, and he sent them film of me. About two hours later they said they wanted to offer me. They said they thought I'd be a great fit for their ‘3-4' defense as a big defensive end.

"I watch a lot of college football, but as far as Notre Dame, I don't know much about them. I know they have good academics, and it's a Catholic school, but other than that I don't know too much about them."

Although Hughes doesn't know much about Notre Dame or the new coaching staff, he's going to keep his options open until he finds the right school. With 19 scholarship offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Oklahoma, LSU, Michigan, Cal, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Oregon, he already has plenty of college options.

"I'm interested in every school right now," he said. "A lot of schools that are recruiting me have already sent me an offer. Alabama is recruiting me and I get a lot of mail from them, but they haven't offered me yet. I get letters from Miami, and some others.

"I haven't narrowed it down to a top-5 or top-10 yet. I'm looking at a lot of schools right now, and Notre Dame is definitely one of those schools.

"I'm going to visit LSU this weekend," he said. "After that I'm going to wait until summer to visit other schools. There's a good chance that I'll visit Notre Dame."

Hughes has the potential to be a dominating defensive lineman at the college level and when you see him on film it's easy to understand why so many college coaches are knocking on his door.

"I'm big and I hustle," Hughes replied when asked about his ability on the field. "Some people give up on plays, but I don't. I'll make a tackle 30-yards down field, because I don't give up. I can play the run and I can pass rush. I had 11 sacks in eight games last season." Top Stories
