Christian French (6-foot-6, 215-pounds) is the a defensive end prospect for some schools, but Notre Dame likes his potential at outside linebacker. French made a trip to Notre Dame several weeks back and is making plans to return for the Notre Dame spring game.
"I'm planning on coming down for the Notre Dame spring game," French responded when asked about his plans for unofficial visits. "Communication with the coaches has gone pretty well. They've been in contact with my coaches and they have me call them. They called this week just to see how things were going, so the communication has been going well with Notre Dame.
"I talked to Coach Diaco, coach Martin and a little bit to coach Cooks too. When I went down there I spoke with all of them. Coach Martin is a good guy. He's upfront. He tells me what they're looking for and telling about the impact that I can make on the program. When I talk to him on the phone or talk to him in person, he tells me the stuff that I want to hear. He doesn't tell me that I'm better than I am or that I'm not this or I'm not that. He just talks to me straight up and he's a standup guy.
"Coach Diaco is a real motivational speaker that gets you ready to play football," he said.. "He has a big presence in the room… just the way he does stuff. He gets his point across. He tells you what Notre Dame can do for you and he tells you what you can do for the program. He just tells you how they want to do stuff. He's a real good guy."
Since receiving his offer from Notre Dame back in March, French has had a number of additional schools check in on him. Nebraska, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, USC, and Tennessee are a couple of those schools.
"I've gotten a couple more offers from Kansas State and Louisville," French explained. "I think the fact that I was playing out of position was the reason I wasn't as highly recruited before. Now that I've gotten bigger offers, I think more offers will be coming."
Although French is keeping his options open, this summer he's going to begin to focus on a handful of select schools.
"There will be a point that I have to sit down and say that these schools are my top five and look at the pros and cons," French explained. "But right now, there is no set date. I'm just trying to feel things out and feel my way through this. I'm talking to coaches and seeing how that affects me and seeing what I can do at that school. I'm looking at the atmosphere and how comfortable I am at that school. There is no set time and no set date for my decision, it could be sometime in the summer or sometime before my season."
