Irish Eyes Take: Matt Hegarty

Brian Kelly and his staff received their ninth verbal pledge as Matt Hegarty of Aztec, New Mexico jumped on the Irish bandwagon. IrishEyes.com gives you our take about this offensive lineman from the West.

Brian Kelly has picked up another stud offensive lineman for the Class of 2011 in Matt Hegarty. Why was Hegarty sought after by so many programs? Because he's got all the things you look for in an offensive lineman when you run a spread attack.

What To Like

Explosion! That is what stands out when you watch film of Matt Hegarty. In pass drops he shows foot quickness and lower body agility to quickly drop backwards and maintain balance as a defender is moving towards him. His use of hands and the ability to strike a solid blow with power places him above most high school linemen. While Hegarty shows above average pass blocking skills, he's also fully capable of getting off the line as a run blocker with low pad level. Shows a great base with the ability to move laterally and mirror a defender.

What May Concern You

Hegarty is a kid who has seen his weight jump from the 250-pound range to about 290-pounds. This has happened in the past two and you might wonder just how strong he is in the upper body. But whatever he's lacking in brute physical strength he makes up with explosion from the hips.

Bottom Line

Matt Hegarty has all the tools to become a top college football player. Athletic with a frame that Paul Longo will be able to chisel, Hegarty is the type of prospect Notre Dame fans have been asking if Brian Kelly could land. Beating USC and Texas to name a few is major for Kelly and his staff.
