Bates interested in Irish

One of the top running back prospects on the west coast this year is Jackie Bates. The 5-10, 187-pound prospect had a great year last year backing up UCLA-bound Maurice Drew. Bates should be the featured back this year and he is interested in the Irish.

Jackie Bates had a good junior season in a reserve role for Concord De La Salle. He rushed 69 times for 747 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also played some free safety and recorded 77 tackles and 3 interceptions.

Bates also ran a blazing 4.38 at the Cal camp last year. "I am not sure what camps I will attend this year. I know I am going to the Northern California Nike camp for sure. I will probably go to Cal and UCLA and maybe USC."

Bates can't get to many camps this year because of track. "I run the 100 and 200. My best times are 10.7 and 22 flat."

So what is Jackie looking for in a school and program? "I will be looking at the depth chart and see where I can play early. The academics will be important and the social life is also important. I don't have any problem leaving California at all."

Jackie said he wasn't sure on his core g.p.a. but said he had a 2.8 accumulative. He said he plans to take the S.A.T. in May.

Bates is also very interested in Notre Dame. "I am very interested. Derek Landri is a real good friend of mine. I want to visit there and see what Notre Dame is like."

Bates has one offer so far in Oregon State but is also interested in Cal, Miami, FSU, Michigan, Texas, UCLA, USC, Oregon and Ohio State as well as Notre Dame.

Bates would like to make an early decision. "I would like to do it before my season starts. I want to avoid the process if I can and just concentrate on my season. Some friends and I are going to visit USC and UCLA this summer. I hope to visit other schools this summer as well. Notre Dame, Ohio State, Miami and Texas are some schools I hope I can go see."

Bates said he hopes his team can keep the streak alive at De La Salle. "We have some big, strong linemen coming back. We have one of the best junior classes at De La Salle ever so hopefully we can continue the streak."

Comments. Jackie is a ND kid. He would really fit in well. For ND to have a shot, they will have to get him on campus if he decides to commit early. He fits the ND mold and seems very interested in Notre Dame. I will keep in touch with Jackie. Thanks to him for sending a picture. Top Stories
