Irish Eyes Take: Clay Burton

Brian Kelly added a solid player to the Class of 2011 in Clay Burton. Irish Eyes reviews Notre Dame's 10th verbal commitment.

While Clay Burton may only be a 3-star prospect, his upside is that of a 5-star player. Sought by many programs, Burton shows all the tools to be a solid player in Brian Kelly's defense. What To Like

Burst to the point of attack. With a long frame, Burton is able to line up as a defensive end while also being able to drop back into an outside hybrid linebacker position in a 3-4 defense. On film you see a player that has more than one move, but also the ability to hit a gap or go one-on-one. Another area that Burton shows an advanced level is getting his hand up into the passing lane and blocking passes.

What May Concern You

Others have expressed Burton lacks speed and explosiveness. I have to disagree from watching the several film clips we have on Burton. While Burton may have been timed at 4.8 in the forty, he plays with great quickness. The one area I see that concerns me most is in his first step he often comes up out of his stance and gets high losing power. This is teachable and something in time that will be fixed.

Bottom Line

This is a very big addition to the Class of 2011. Burton fits into the Irish defensive scheme and has all the tools to be a player who should come in and compete early in his career. Great size with great physical ability and burst makes Clay Burton a player who will thrive in the Irish strength program and great things should be expected from him on the field. Top Stories
