Zach DeBell(6-foot-7, 265-pounds) had some interest in Notre Dame, but the contact with the Irish had been limited. So when he woke up last Thursday morning to find an email from Irish assistant Tony Alford, it did raise an eyebrow.
"They did offer. I talked to coach Tony Alford," DeBell said. "He sent me an email and told me to call him, because he had good news. I called him and he said that that they were going to offer me a scholarship. I was pretty happy.
"What I really like about Notre Dame is their prestige and their academics. They have a great history, a huge fan base. You can go all over the world and meet people that are fans of Notre Dame or have graduated from Notre Dame. I think that's pretty cool.
"(Contact) with them has kind of been on and off, but once I received that email I was kind of like ‘Whoa!" I'm very interested in Notre Dame. I'll probably go up there sometime before school starts. Hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll be able to get up there."
If DeBell ends up in South Bend in the next couple weeks, he'll have a solid group of schools to compare Notre Dame with.
"I've visited Florida, Florida State, Miami, UCF, USF, Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Clemson, Appalachian State, North Carolina, Ole Miss and Tennessee," he said. "I don't have any other unofficial visits planned, but I might have to go up to North Carolina to help clear out my grandmother's house, so we might hit up South Carolina and Clemson to just so hello to some of the coaches that I haven't met yet.
"I owe that a lot to my folks, because they drive me to all these schools. And they do a lot for me, so I'm really grateful for my folks for helping me out with this recruiting process. I just want to make an educated decision and see my options.
"I'm going to take all five of my officials," he said. "I'll probably make my decision after I've taken all of my official visits."
