Irish Eyes Take – Ben Councell

Irish Eyes has the following to take on the newest member of Brian Kelly's recruiting class for 2011.

Brian Kelly and his staff continue to pull in early pledges making the Class of 2011 stronger with each passing week. Getting Ben Councell on board is another major step in filling the class with a player who fits into Kelly's system.

What To Like

Ben Councell has the frame that Paul Longo loves to work with. Long and lean, Longo will be able to build the North Carolina product into a machine that will compete at the highest level of college football. In Bob Diaco's 3-4 defensive scheme, Councell will give the Irish the type of player that can line up on the outside or come up to the edge to rush while still being able to drop into coverage.

What May Concern You

Some will look at Councell's offer list and say it's not that impressive. But Brian Kelly is not interested in what others programs like or not. He looks for the guys that will fit into what he's got plan and what Paul Longo will do with them. Councell is a guy who will get to know Longo and Jake Flint very well in the coming years as he's got some development to do. But Longo will get the job done.

Bottom Line

Councell is a winner and plays at a high level in high school. He's got work to do and will develop in the Irish strength program to reach new levels of strength and ability. While he's not a finished product he's got the skills to have success at Notre Dame and is a huge get for Mike Elston as he works the Carolina's in the coming years. Kelly and his staff has recruited a guy much like Councell while at Cincinnati in Walt Stewart who has the long frame and entered UC at just under 200-pounds. Stewart is now 225-pounds and gave Kelly a weapon last season posting 4.5 sacks with a total of 8.5 tackles for loss to go with 59 total tackles as a redshirt freshman. Top Stories
