Williams Misses ND Camp

It was a date that Carl Williams was looking forward to, but last minute change of plans prevented the defensive back from First Coast High School (Jacksonville, Fla.) from attending the Notre Dame summer football camp.

Carl Williams (6-foot-0, 185-pounds) had been planning on attending the Notre Dame football camp for months. Those plans were still in place just a couple days before he was leaving for South Bend. Unfortunately for Notre Dame and for Williams, he had to cancel his trip.

"I never got a chance to go," Williams said. "I was very disappointed and mad about it. I let coach Hinton know though.

I'm still very interested in Notre Dame and coach Hinton let me know that they are going to come down to see me in the fall. He wants me to send him some more film since they didn't get to see me in the camp. They want to see some highlights and a game tape."

Williams does have 17 scholarship offers, so he will be able to wait to hear from Notre Dame later in the year. As it stands he does have three schools that are standing out to him.

"Right now I'm getting the best feel for Illinois, Arkansas, and South Florida," he said. "South Carolina is still in there, but I don't like them as much as the other three.

"I like the Illinois coaches. I like their defensive backs coach. I talk to them about once a week and they tell me a lot of good things about the school and they want me to check them out.

"I like the coaches at Arkansas as well," he said. "I like the program, the school and the location. They're not too close from home and they're not too far from home either. Plus they play in the SEC, a big conference.

"South Florida, I like how they're basically right down the street. I like the coaches. I talk to them a lot. I like the success that they've had with their defensive backs lately and their overall program. Coach Holtz is a good coach."

Williams hasn't visited Arkansas or Illinois, but he'd still like to do that in the near future. A visit to Notre Dame isn't out of the question either.

"I might take a few unofficial visits before I take my official visits," Williams explained. "I'd really like to get up to Notre Dame. I'm hoping I can still get up there before the season for a visit. I might try to get to Arkansas and Illinois and South Florida also."
