Evans to Transfer

Notre Dame sophomore wide receiver Shaquelle Evans asked for and has been granted his release from his scholarship at Notre Dame.

Sophomore wide receiver Shaquelle Evans was competing for a starting spot heading into fall camp, but when it became apparent that he would be asked to come off the bench, rumors started to circulate that Evans was making plans to leave the team.

"He is no longer on the team," Brian Kelly responded when asked about Evan's status with the team during his Tuesday press conference. "He made the decision that it was in his best interest to transfer. We granted him a release. We wish him the very best. He's a good kid.

Evans from Inglewood, Calif. was one of the more highly regarded recruits in Notre Dame's 2009 recruiting class. Evans was rated as the No. 12 wide receiver by Scout.com, and was a U.S. Army All-American Bowl participant. Despite playing in the first five games of the 2009 season, Evans struggled to settle in at Notre Dame., and only saw action in one of the team's final seven contests. Evans ended the season with six receptions for 61 yards, while accumulating 33:15 minutes of playing time.

Evans has not announced where he intends to transfer, but it is believed that he will look to return to the West Coast.
