Golden Keys - The Results

We look at the results of the Golden Keys to Victory for the Purdue contest.

Saturday all eyes were on Notre Dame and the start of the Brian Kelly era as the Irish defeated Purdue. IrishEyes.com gave you the Golden Keys To Victory and now it is time to look back at each key and see how the Irish performed.

Golden Key #1 – Do not get too excited

GOLDEN KEY #1
PURDUE
The team is going to be excited to take the field on Saturday and show off what they have been working on since last spring. However, Brian Kelly and his staff must keep the team focused and ready for anything that will come their way. Kelly and his staff will allow for some emotions to flow on Saturday, but will also keep it business like and focused on a earning a victory.

RESULTS

Kelly had the team ready to go and while everyone was excited in no way were they too far out of control. Kelly commented on making sure he got out of the way when the team took the field because of their excitement.

Golden Key #2 – Set the tone to the game

GOLDEN KEY #2
PURDUE
If the Irish get the ball, look for Brian Kelly to use this possession to set the tone for the rest of the game. Kelly knows he will not always be successful on the first series, but he will take his shots early and often to put Purdue on their heels.

RESULTS

In Brian Kelly fashion the Irish won the toss and took the ball. While it took Notre Dame until their third possion to score, the first two series saw a total of 12 plays and 47 yards. The third time was the charm as the Irish converted an interception into a touchdown going 7 plays for 84 yards.

Golden Key #3 – Defense can bend but not break!

GOLDEN KEY #3
PURDUE
Robert Marve is the key to Purdue and Bob Diaco will need to have his defense contain the former Miami signal caller. In the past, the strength of the 3-4 defense under Diaco allowed for athletic players to try to get outside only to find no where to go, if Marve looks to roll the pocket look for the Irish to close fast. The weakness last season in Diaco's 3-4 scheme was when teams got physical in the middle of the field and tried to run the ball down the throat of the defense.

RESULTS

The Irish got several good performances from the defense and overall they did bend a little but never broke down to a point of concern. The third quarterback was hard on the Irish as Purdue had the ball for over eleven minutes, but when it mattered the most the Irish made the play needed.

Golden Key #4 – Keep Ryan Kerrigan under control

GOLDEN KEY #4
PURDUE
The Purdue defensive end can cause the Irish some headaches if he gets off the way he did last year. Look for the Irish to roll opposite of Kerrigan and give Dayne Crist a chance to work the magic of Brian Kelly's offense.

RESULTS

Kerrigan had a solid day with 7 total tackles including a sack and two tackles for loss while also forcing a fumble. But he was held in check overall by the Irish offensive line. He will have better days in the coming weeks to show how well the Irish did against him.

Golden Key #5 – Score early, Score often

GOLDEN KEY #5
PURDUE
Expect Brian Kelly to work to get on the scoreboard first and then never look back. That is his style and if he can get the Irish offense on a roll, they will push Purdue to the limits.

RESULTS

Kelly and the Irish did score the first ten points in the game before Purdue put up a field goal. The Irish then answered with another touchdown before Purdue put their first touchdown on the board with 11:58 to go in the game.
