In a game that truly lived up to the pre-game hype, Lakewood St. Edward defeated Huber Heights Wayne 35-28, and captured the Ohio Division-I state championship. Both teams played their hearts out and the game wasn't decided until the final play. Head coach Rick Finotti and quarterback Kevin Burke (pictured) discussed the win at the post-game press conference.
Lakewood St. Edward completed their year-long journey, winning the 2010 Ohio Divsion-I state championship, and erasing the memory of last season's 4-6 record. In a game that wasn't decided until the final play, St. Edward fought back on several occasions, when it looked like Wayne was close to putting the game away.
Trailing 21-7 midway through the third quarter, St. Edward rallied behind senior quarterback Kevin Burke to get the lead, only to see Braxton Miller drive Wayne the length of the field to take a 28-27 lead with less than three minutes left to play.
Burke then took St. Edward on a championship winning 60-yard drive, that culminated in a touchdown with a little over one minute left, and a 35-28 lead that the defense preserved. Burke was outstanding in the contest, rushing for 130 yards and throwing for 89 yards, and accounting for two touchdowns.
In the post-game press conference, both Burke and head coach Rick Finotti discussed the victory.
