Junior Prospect - Gary Russell

Columbus Walnut Ridge standout Gary Russell is one of Ohio's best running backs. Duane Long has the latest on him.

It's a good year for running backs in Ohio, and one who is on OSU's radar is Columbus Walnut Ridge standout Gary Russell. Russell stands in at 5-11, 215 and runs a 4.5, and he had 1,800 yards last year. He is currently hearing from the Buckeyes quite often.

"Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Colorado, and Indiana are contacting the most," he said. "Pitt is talking to me about an offer."

"I'm going to camp at Ohio State, Colorado and Maryland."

Gary will have a busy day this Saturday as he is going to be taking his test at 8 am and then will be going to OSU at 1 pm. Right now, he is focusing on hitting the weights; he was thinking of running track but got concerned about getting injured.

Bill Conley is recruiting him for Ohio State, and the Buckeyes are at the top of his list.

"My Favorites are Ohio State, Colorado and Pitt," he said.

Gary says he hopes to make a decision when he gets the offer he wants, and how he feels about the school's academics will be an important factor in the decision.

Gary, who lists his favorite player as Marshall Faulk, had to do some interesting things on the field last year.

"I played DT on defense," he said.

How does he think he did?

"I try to be the best I can be at anything I can do."
