Signing Day Impact Doran Grant

Receiving commitments at nationally televised all-star games is not usually a staple of Ohio State recruiting, but Doran Grant broke the mold in Orlando last month when he pledged to the Buckeyes at the Under Armour game. The four-star recruit had offers from nearly the entire country.

Even though it would be hard to label it a surprise, the commitment of Doran Grant to Ohio State was a welcome sight to Buckeye fans accustomed to watching painful all-star game announcements. Seeing Grant commit to the Buckeyes at the Under Armour game was a joy not often experienced by Ohio State followers.

Grant, 5-foot-10, 180-pounds, is a four-star recruit, and is ranked as one of the top cornerbacks in the nation by Scout. With Ohio State losing both Devon Torrence and Chimdi Chekwa, Grant has a real opportunity to come in and challenge for instant playing time.

Even though his father, Ted Jones, played for Michigan State, Grant chose the Buckeyes, and helped fill a Buckeye need in the secondary. Grant could also be a factor in the return game, and could play wide receiver in a pinch.

Doran Grant is simply as fluid an athlete as you will find anywhere, and he also has speed and foot quickness. Grant should start out as a cornerback in the Ohio State system, but there's no doubt he could be an effective safety. He needs work on his backpedal and coverage technique, but he has the skills needed to play out on an island.

"Grant plays wide receiver and corner for his team. He has the agility to cut around defenders and the speed to pin his ears back and run by them. His exceptional change of direction and strength make him an ideal candidate to play corner. Has a knack for baiting quarterbacks into making throws that he wants to close on for the interception. Strong at the point of attack, great closing speed, and a weapon once the ball is in hands," - Scott Kennedy.

Grant on his decision:

Doran Grant has committed to Ohio State, becoming the 20th member of the 2011 Buckeye recruiting class. Grant made his announcement Wednesday evening at the Under Armour game televised on ESPN.

Grant, 5-foot-11, 175-pounds participated all week at Under Armour activities, and he showed why he is the nation's number two-rated cornerback, and a five-star recruit.

"I have committed to the Buckeyes, because it's home for me and always has been," Grant stated. "I just think it's a great fit, and I look forward to contributing to their defense, and possibly on offense, too. I'm coming in, and I'm ready to get going. I'm really excited to be headed to Ohio State."

"My position coach, Taver Johnson, played a big part in my decision, as did the whole Ohio State coaching staff," he added. "We became great friends, and we've talked a lot over the phone and with e-mail. We really talked a lot, and I trust him with my career. He will take me where I need to be."
