In a surprise to Ohio and Pennsylvania recruiting fans, Kyle Mitchum - from Erie, PA - was extended an offer by Ohio State. Mitchum's coach, John Cacchione confirmed the offer to me. Kyle is 6'5", 265 pounds and plays right tackle on the offensive line and plays nose tackle on defense.
How impressive is Kyle? Well, we will show you his video next week when it gets in. But we can tell you this week that he has offers from Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland, Pitt, Michigan State, Syracuse, Iowa, West Virginia, Virginia and Colorado. That's quite a list… especially when you consider that Kyle has yet to attend a college football camp!
Kyle says he hopes to get to a couple one-day camps this summer, along with Coach Cacchione. And is Ohio State high on his list? Yes, it is. Kyle will be visiting OSU on April 23, "by request of Coach Tressel and my recruiter, Joe Daniels". Cacchione desribes Coach Daniels' reaction to Kyle's football film this way: "As good as any I've seen".
But wait a minute - we're talking Pennsylvania here. Isn't PSU or Pitt a prohibitive favorite? "Actually," Kyle says. "I didn't grow up following any team. I watched Ohio State as much as anyone. And it doesn't take much longer from here to get to Columbus than it does to State College."
Kyle plays in the biggest PA division and was second team All-State last year, the only underclassmen to be named to the first or second team as an offensive lineman. He benches 330 and squats nearly 400 pounds. And although McDowell High School has used him more as a run blocker, he feels he's equally good against the pass.
"I plan to get to 290 pounds by the time I'm ready to go in college"
And we plan to talk with Kyle again after his visit to Columbus a week from Wednesday.
