Stoops Has Communication With Meyer

Urban Meyer has only been the Ohio State head football coach for a few days, but he could be close to making a splash in his hiring process. Meyer has been in recent contact with former Arizona head coach and defensive guru Mike Stoops.

Former Arizona head coach Mike Stoops confirmed with Buckeye Sports Bulletin Thursday afternoon that he's been in contact with Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer about a potential position on the defensive staff.

"I have talked to Urban," Stoops told BSB. "Of course it is something I am interested in. I am not going to comment on (whether I've been offered a position). I've talked to Coach Meyer and that's all I am going to say."

Stoops was let go by Arizona after the Wildcats started 1-5 this season and was recently replaced by former West Virginia and Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez.

There's a reason, however, Stoops is a candidate to work under Meyer. Growing up in Youngstown, Ohio before playing his college football at Iowa, Stoops served under Bill Snyder at Kansas State.

His brother, Bob, served as his boss at Oklahoma where Stoops was the Sooners' defensive coordinator. Stoops helped the Sooners achieve the national championship in 2000.

Since being let go by Arizona Stoops said he's had the itch to get back into coaching.

"That's what I want to do and certainly Ohio State is a great place to do that," he said. "Coach Meyer is a great person and a great coach, and there were a lot of very positive things going on. Coach Meyer is trying to put his staff together and do the best he can while making sure he gets great continuity."

Stoops didn't provide a time frame for things to move forward, but was encouraged by the talk he had with Meyer. He did confirm that he was in Columbus Wednesday.

"We had communication," Stoops said. "We are going to see how everything falls."
