Recruiting Needs: Safety

As National Signing Day approaches, it's time to look at how Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is filling needs at each position group. Where do things stand, today and for the future, at the safety position?

As recruiting approaches the finish line, with National Signing Day one week away, how has Ohio State filled its needs at each position group?

Urban Meyer has done an amazing job in his first two months on the job, but where do things stand specifically with specific player needs?

SAFETY: All three top contributors return from last season, and there are several younger players waiting for a chance. A very deep position for 2012.

Orhian Johnson: A contributor for the better part of three seasons, Johnson's play has been average, but has not gotten significantly better. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Senior.

C.J. Barnett: A starter the past two seasons, and last year was the first back from a serious knee injury. Barnett should be ready for stardom next season. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Junior.

Christian Bryant: A contributor and part-time starter since his freshman season. Bryant was up and down last season, but has a world of talent and should be greatly improved this season. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Junior.

Corey Brown: Returns after spending most of last season rehabbing a serious knee injury. Brown was starting to show promise prior to the injury. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Junior.

Zach Domicone: Played mostly special teams in his career, although he did see time at safety following injuries. Not considered to be a factor for next season. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Senior.

Jamie Wood: A talented player, but one that has not seen any meaningful playing time to date. Would be considered a backup for next season. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Junior.

Ron Tanner: A player who redshirted last season, but was a highly-rated prospect coming out of high school. Could press for backup duty next season. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Freshman.

Devan Bogard: Four-star recruit, and a redshirt candidate or a possible special team player.

Tyvis Powell: Three-star prospect, and a candidate to redshirt next season.

Najee Murray: Could factor in at cornerback, especially with that position being thin in numbers.

Demetrious Cox: Will decide on Signing Day. Four-star prospect.

Bam Bradley: Another Signing Day decision.

Dymonte Thomas: A Michigan commit, but a player Meyer has targeted.

Leon McQuay: Armwood (FLA) athlete, and a visitor last year.

Jayme Thompson: Toledo Central Catholic athlete, and a prospect with offers.

SUMMARY OUTLOOK: Lots of candidates and lots of depth, for today and in the future. Bradley and Cox would both be considered luxuries, not necessities. The outlook is bright.
