Urban Meyer has done an amazing job in his first two months on the job, but where do things stand specifically with specific player needs?
LINEBACKER: Not exactly what people came to expect out of this group last season. Maybe moving Luke Fickell back in charge of the linebackers pays off? Lots of experience returning, and reasons to believe this could be a strength this season.
Etienne Sabino: Returns for his second season as a starter, and following an up-and-down season, he finished the year strongly. Ohio State's Gator Bowl MVP for his showing against the Gators. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Senior.
Ryan Shazier: Impressed from the first day of fall camp as a true freshman last year. The sky is the limit for this potential All-American. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Sophomore.
Storm Klein: Gained valuable experience as a part-time starter last season, following two injury-plagued seasons. Needs to step up his game this season to become a full-time starter. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Senior.
Curtis Grant: Possibly the key player in this group for next season. Was never able to get meaningful minutes last season as a true freshman, but will get every opportunity to earn time this season. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Sophomore.
Jordan Whiting: Appears to be buried on the depth chart behind others. Needs to make a move in the spring to have a shot at playing time. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Junior.
Conner Crowell: The mystery man of the group, and it's not sure where he will be from a health perspective this season. ELIGIBILITY FOR 2012: Freshman.
Joshua Perry: Could project to a number of positions, but will start at linebacker.
Luke Roberts: Projects as a middle linebacker, and a possible redshirt next season.
David Perkins: Great athlete like Perry, and also could play any number of positions.
Camren Williams: Will need to add strength and bulk, but is an impressive looking athlete on film.
POSSIBILITIES FOR 2012:
POSSIBILITIES FOR 2013:
Jaylon Smith: Top target out of Indiana.
Tim Kimbrough: Another fine Indiana prospect.
Michael McCray: One of Ohio's top defensive prospects.
Courtney Love: A power player out of Cardinal Mooney.
SUMMARY OUTLOOK: Three returnees for next year, and if Crowell and Grant are legitimate players, depth is fine. Looking down the road, there is considerable talent, especially with what Meyer has landed.
