South Miami Senior High School's Javier Estopinan has many options open in terms of which direction he wants to go after high school. This two-sport athlete is being heavily recruited for both football and wrestling and has the grades to perform well at a higher level of education.
For wrestling, Stanford is among several of the schools that would like to see him on their mats by the time his freshman year arrives. However, Javier Estopinan feels his calling is on the football field. This LB/TE has good size measuring 6'3" and weighing in at 235 pounds. With 4.65 forty time, his size has not compromised his speed either.
Proclaiming himself in one word as an "aggressive" player, Estopinan recorded 110 tackles, 27 for loss, 5 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 1 for a touchdown during his junior year campaign. As far as improvement is concerned, Javier (known as "Javy" amongst his friends and family) feels he could work on his hips some more and his 20 time if he really wants to perform well in college.
Offers for football having been pouring in for this Florida talent. Schools that have taken interest in him include Ohio State, NC State, LSU, Florida State, Pittsburgh, Florida, Boston College, and Rutgers. He has received offers from all of these programs with the exception of Ohio State and Pittsburgh. He will camp at NC State and Ohio State this summer.
"Recruiting has been an exciting time for me," says Javier. "It is the only time in my life I will get recruited; I will never get recruited again. Everything is a new experience."
Javier says his most memorable moment on the field was when he caught his first touchdown pass as a varsity player. "It was my sophomore year and we were playing in the Spring Jamboree. I was playing tight end, and I caught a 68-yard pass for a touchdown. It was my first touchdown on varsity, and it was a great feeling."
When speaking with Javier is apparent he possesses a high level of competitiveness. "The worst feeling was when we lost to Coral Gables (local rival). We had to hear about it from them for an entire year. This is motivation enough to make sure it doesn't happen again."
Javier enjoys collecting memorabilia cards and watching his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, when he is not playing football. A long-time Florida State and Emmit Smith fan, Javier plans on studying either electrical engineering or computer science in college.
Javier Estopinan is a special athlete who will make major contributions as a Division I football player. He has the size, speed, and intelligence to excel both on the football field and as a student. Keep an eye on him; he is one to watch this season.
