Chat Transcript from tonight's club chat with Jerry Rudzinski

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:04:33 PM)
Just waiting for a few more folks to come in and then we'll kick things off

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:04:44 PM)
OK...I know it's probably been asked several times before, but when does fall practice begin?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:05:14 PM)
Should start August 5th from what I am hearing (orientation things)

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:05:26 PM)
Great, thanks!

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:07:16 PM)
I see a few people coming in... we'll get it kicked off once they get in here.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:07:33 PM)
Too bad about Ivan

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:07:47 PM)
Tough break. Hopefully he gets well

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:07:55 PM)
Yeah I was hoping that one wasn't true

buckeyedan (Jul 17, 2003 7:08:07 PM)
hope all goes well for him overall

viperdriver (Jul 17, 2003 7:08:15 PM)
I just watched the video of Jamario Oneal, WOW!! That kid is the real deal!!!

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:08:17 PM)
My father is a doctor, I have been meaning to talk to him about it

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:08:42 PM)
Anytime you lose a 6'8" 315 lbs. returning starting tackle from a national championship hurts. the main thing though is his health

buckeyedan (Jul 17, 2003 7:08:55 PM)

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:09:11 PM)
I haven't seen enough of Mario Manningham to really make an evaluation, but I think Jamario O'Neal is the best prospect in Ohio regardless of class until I see otherwise

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:09:18 PM)
I liked hearing he was going to stay with the team to help out this year

viperdriver (Jul 17, 2003 7:09:32 PM)
I agree

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:10:00 PM)
Talked to Lachey today about Ivan...he says his pass blocking was really turning the corner. Just too bad

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:10:29 PM)
OK JRud you called Gamble last season, who's it gonna be this year to step up?

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:10:45 PM)
First and foremost you worry about Douglas' health...but it is nice to have Rob Sims waiting in the wings

buckeyedan (Jul 17, 2003 7:10:51 PM)
yep... are they looking to move Sims in or possibly move Olivea back to LT?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:11:05 PM)
Nobody to level of Gamble. Holmes will be exactly what we saw in the spring game. Hawk goes from real good to great this year

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:11:23 PM)
How about D'Andrea? Do you think he starts at the Mike?

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:11:35 PM)

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:11:41 PM)
Simms will get first crack. Don't forget that Mangold looks good (which allows Stepanovich to move around)

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:12:14 PM)
I think our best line combo is Sims, Clarke, Mangold, Stepanovich, Olivea

buckeyedan (Jul 17, 2003 7:12:26 PM)
sure but I am sure they will still want to go with "depth" to wear teams down

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:12:47 PM)
I think D'Andrea starts at the Mike with Pagac getting a good amount of time. I could see Hawk there as well with Carpenter and Reynolds outside. Coaches have not gone that direction though.

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:13:17 PM)
How bad will the eye injury set Carpenter back?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:13:20 PM)
With Ivan, depth is what hurts. Competition makes every linemen better. You work harder when you are looking over your shoulder.

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:13:48 PM)
Good point!

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:13:57 PM)
His eye will be fine. His lack of reps will hurt. They can flood him with reps in August to get in the groove mentally. He should contribute from the get go

buckeyedan (Jul 17, 2003 7:14:04 PM)
other than the "6" returning? who do you see stepping up for PT?

buckeyedan (Jul 17, 2003 7:14:47 PM)
sorry talking about OL

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:15:45 PM)
Depth-wise, we can't forget about Mike Kne... Bollman called him one of the top eight linemen last year

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:16:10 PM)
Who do you think will be more effective this year backing up Mo, Ross or Hall?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:16:30 PM)
Boy, I don't know. All those guys are pretty equal. I think they all can step up, but not challenge for jobs. Datish, even Barton...Lachey likes Kne.

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:16:45 PM)
I'd like to see Datish step up this year. He's young and come 2004 he will need to be on the field

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:17:28 PM)
I like Ross running the ball. I like the Hall creating mismatches in the passing game with his speed. Play them both. You need three anymore in the Big Ten. But if had to have one carry twenty times...its Ross.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:17:57 PM)
A linebacker on Hall out of motion might get ugly for the opponent

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:18:19 PM)
It would be nice to see more passes to the backs this year...

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:18:26 PM)
I just hope Ross can get over his happy feet

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:18:34 PM)
Who's your #3 QB Jerry?

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:18:45 PM)
Yeah Kirk, put him on the spot!

sandtraps (Jul 17, 2003 7:18:47 PM)
you have the wrong password on the front page

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:18:50 PM)
Exactly. Ross needs to get up field RIGHT NOW. That will come this year

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:18:51 PM)
THE question

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:18:57 PM)
I go with Troy Smith. Stud

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:19:30 PM)
In my mind, the gap was huge going into spring. Zwick tightened it, but I still like Smith

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:19:32 PM)
And to think Smith was a last minute addition to the class...

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:19:55 PM)
That is how it works. Big Daddy was last minute too. Terry Glenn walked on.

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:20:00 PM)
I know crazy

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:20:13 PM)
That's it, I'm done following recruiting!

kong (Jul 17, 2003 7:20:53 PM)
OK. What about Middle linebacker? Who's it gonna be?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:20:57 PM)
I give up as well. Antoine Winfield was just another player coming in. So was Keller and Murphy

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:21:11 PM)
Sorry about the password thing; I'll fix it

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:21:44 PM)
Do you think Drew Carter will step up opposite Jenkins? Who do you think will win the #2 job(assuming Gamble plays mostly on D to start)

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:22:05 PM)
I think D'Andrea gets the nod. Pug will play a lot though. Hawk should learn that position. Kind of like Wilhelm. Wilhelm was an outside that they moved in as an experiment to get the best three out there. That seemed to work.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:22:33 PM)
I go with GAmble as a starter. Then I think Holmes is next on the list. Then Carter.

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:23:00 PM)
Carter scared me with the hands he showed

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:23:03 PM)
I heard the other day that Pug was considered the #1 at this point but I will agree with Jerry that MD will start this year

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:24:15 PM)
Are Salley and Allen going to be our starters at Safety? Who else do you like back there?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:24:19 PM)
Carters hands haven't always looked great, but his frame and SPEED scare the opponents. He adds a threat that they have to contend with.

kong (Jul 17, 2003 7:25:14 PM)
Donte Whitner

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:25:57 PM)
kong you took what I was going ot say

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:26:11 PM)
Allen is our best. Salley is next. Everett looks good, but I wouldn't mind seeing Whitner or Underwood step up so Fox could move back. We'll see. Right now, Gamble, Fox, Allen and Salley are the best four. It makes the most sense for Fox to stay at corner with that in mind. Allen is way underrated.

kong (Jul 17, 2003 7:26:46 PM)
It would be nice to have the speed of a Whtner back there. You'll see ...he loves to hit too.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:27:16 PM)
And by the way...Fox did nothing wrong at corner. I just think he is a natural safety. Let him tackle more.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:27:40 PM)
Whitner is the nickel right now in my mind. He may move up once he gets going.

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:27:52 PM)
I really like Fox at corner though he made some outstanding plays last year

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:28:49 PM)
He's an athlete. He competes. Some of the corners out there are great athletes, but they don't aggresssively compete to make a play on the ball (that is what I mean by competing)

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:28:53 PM)
I hear Adrien is in the lower 300's. Anyone know about Shane? Others

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:29:18 PM)
Last I heard on Shane is he's up there. Haven't seen him lately. The shoulder injury didn't help.

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:29:41 PM)
If that's true he better stay at RT

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:29:57 PM)
Too bad - hope he drops some. What about Downing since we need tackles?

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:30:10 PM)
Is Kne a tackle or guard?

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:30:29 PM)
Do you play any NCAA 200 Jerry?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:30:47 PM)
Downing is another guy that could flirt with playing time now that Ivan is out. I still think he needs some time. Kne is a tackle...true tackle in my mind.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:31:01 PM)
I don't play the NCAA 2000. Is it sweet

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:31:31 PM)
yeah, just came out, didn't think you played, but htought I would check

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:32:03 PM)
I saw that stuff drain the time of many of my teammates. I didn't want to risk getting hooked.

mac (Jul 17, 2003 7:32:14 PM)

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:32:23 PM)
Jerry, how will the D start out? LB play, new safety?

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:32:25 PM)

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:32:41 PM)
I hear that Jerry. I've lost many a night with my friends to video games

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:33:53 PM)
I am more worried about losing Wilhelm than I am about the safeties. Allen and Salley should be tough. Wilhelm though brought a lot. He choreographed things out there. He was a big, athletic body that KNEW THE SYSTEM as well as anyone.

Drifter (Jul 17, 2003 7:34:10 PM)

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:34:26 PM)
overall, the defense is fine. Our defensive line will take care of a lot of things.

mac (Jul 17, 2003 7:35:01 PM)
will osu offer d ferguson

Drifter (Jul 17, 2003 7:35:17 PM)
how's D'Andrea developing - it seems like he has all of the physical tools to be great but instincts might be lacking.

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:35:25 PM)
I would expect the D to grow/improve with PT. Agree?

ESPY (Jul 17, 2003 7:35:36 PM)
Is there any news about zwick and smith, how there performing and who is gonna start nest year?

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:36:07 PM)
which RS freshmen will make the biggest impact on the DL this year, Richardson, Penton, or Pitcock?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:36:21 PM)
Wilhelm knew every check, every gap responsiblity, every coverage to switch to with motion and shifting. He was the communicator as well. Down and distance, personnel, time on the clock, etc. It is one thing to memorize assignments, it is another thing to actually know and understand why they are your assignments.

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:37:01 PM)
Jerry, who did you like at the NS HS game?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:39:02 PM)
D'Andrea is getting better and better. His physical tools are awesome. His instincts are fine. Like all newcomers, he needs to trust himself and make his mistakes 100 mph. Shoot your gun. Make a play. When you do that, you play much better in space. Thinking in space gets you hurt. Reacting in space is the way to go.

mac (Jul 17, 2003 7:40:00 PM)
how about art schlisters son or nephew is he a soph or jr

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:40:04 PM)
I think Smith has the edge right now. It's not over though. But I love Smith. I think Richardson makes the biggest impact. He is tough coming off that edge with his range and speed.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:41:13 PM)
I loved Wheelwright obviously. I thought Lukens brings a neat dimension. Mauk and Quinn are both big time quarterbacks.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:41:46 PM)
I don't know about Schlisters relative. I need to call Duane on that one.

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:42:01 PM)
I am looking forward to seeing Lukens in the Big 33 game. Maybe he will be the next Cie Grant type OLB

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:42:52 PM)
Mac, he's a soph this year (Ozone had a column on him)

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:42:55 PM)
I think he's going to vbe a soph

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:43:31 PM)
That would be huge. I was a doubter about Lukens at safety. That game helped me understand the thinking with him at safety. I still think he ends up an outside linebacker in the end. If he can tackle as well as I think he can, the future is bright. It will come down to how physical he is.

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:44:43 PM)
Jerry, if you were coaching who would be starting LB's/wil/sam//mike?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:47:27 PM)
Carpenter, Reynolds and Hawk. Do they have the most potential...probably not. I think they are the best three right now though. Great question...because I think we still have a nice lineup with Pug OR D'Andrea in the middle with Reynolds and Hawk on the outside. Many don't realize that Pug plays the run as well as any of them. He wouldn't be in there in nickel or passing situations, but he does a nice job in there

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:48:01 PM)
Thanks, Jerry, have you seen the sandbox and improvements to the WHAC? How it going?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:48:59 PM)
I haven't checked that out. I need to get a look. From what I hear, it's not all together yet, but when it is done, look out.

viperdriver (Jul 17, 2003 7:49:16 PM)
How many reps do you see the young guns getting this year?

Drifter (Jul 17, 2003 7:50:30 PM)
so much was made of OSU's LB needs this past recruiting year, but there are a lot of us that are very optimistic. The sophs are looking awesome and we got a hell of a deal on Kerr and the dude from the AF Academy.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:50:30 PM)
I assume you mean qb's. Krenzel in out tight ones...end of story. In blowouts. McMullen gets the second half of the 3rd quarter while Smith and Zwick share the fourth. Boring answer, but that is how I see it happening.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:50:58 PM)
I think Schlagel would start if he was eligible this year. I like him.

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:51:17 PM)
Can you tell yet how the team will handle this year coming off an NC? I expect the Srs to provide leadership which will help the youngsters. Do you think they are aware of what it takes to defend the NC?

viperdriver (Jul 17, 2003 7:51:22 PM)
schlegal will be a madman, just wait and see

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:52:07 PM)
I think most of the freshmen will redshirt, but I like this group of players coming in... I think they're underrated. If you want a sleeper watch Marcel Frost

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:52:59 PM)
I think they will play as hard or even harder in the defense of there NC. I hate to say it, but sometimes it takes more than effort. Fumbles, interceptions and careless flags could cost a game on the road this year if we don't watch it. Effort will be there, but they need to avoid carelessness like they did last year.

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:53:00 PM)
Kirk, a lot of people (in the know like yourself) think Marcel is THE steal/sleeper.

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:53:16 PM)
I liked Frost's video. He looked like he could do some damage at TE.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:53:39 PM)
By the way, with that NS game...Patterson was a beast. He should get some reps this year.

viperdriver (Jul 17, 2003 7:53:51 PM)
Will Irizarry possibly move to WR?

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:54:00 PM)
Is Patterson playing Saturday night?

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 7:54:24 PM)
I think he is... he wasn't practicing earlier in the week but I believe he's playing

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:54:36 PM)
Jerry, anything going on the with the coaching staff preparing this team, preparing to defend?

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:54:56 PM)
I don't think he will. It's tough because he is somewhat of a tweener in my mind. They will flex him out until he builds his body up. When Irizary comes in the game, the opponents will know exactly what we are up to in the early stages of his career.

scribeohio (Jul 17, 2003 7:55:05 PM)
I heard Patterson was late due to a death in the family but will play.

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:56:22 PM)
I didn't get to see the All-Star game a few weeks ago. I'm looking forward to seeing guys like LI, Patterson, Maupin, Barton, Lukens.(Football is almost back!!!)

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:57:39 PM)
The coaches have put last year behind them. They are READY to get after these guys in August. "You 'big time' sit on the bench." What have you done for me lately is the fans, administration, and coaches philosophy. The beauty of it is...the depth we have will make these guys work. Many guys sit up at night petrified of losing a starting job to the superstar behind them. That is how Bowden dominated all those years. He had 3 deep everywhere which made those guys work.

Drifter (Jul 17, 2003 7:58:17 PM)
was curious about Lydell Ross and Maurice Hall. Are both back to 100%. Both are great backs and would probably start at 90% of the DIV I teams.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 7:58:46 PM)
Both are healthy and both will play like last year. The pecking order should be the exact same.

Drifter (Jul 17, 2003 7:59:06 PM)
...a nice luxury to have!

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 7:59:42 PM)
With all the depth we have at DB, any chance Ira Guilford gets a look at RB?

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 7:59:50 PM)
Lydell seems to be working his butt off

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 8:00:19 PM)
You need three anymore. The thing I like the best about those guys is the fear of fumbling. If they fumble, they know they won't get out there the rest of the game and maybe next week as well (exception being Clarett...he would still play).

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 8:00:21 PM)
I think Lydell was hurt late last year but looked healthier in the Fiesta Bowl

Drifter (Jul 17, 2003 8:01:06 PM)
I believe Lydell will turn some heads this year if he stays healthy.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 8:01:37 PM)
I don't think it is out of the question for Ira. He should be a redshirt either way, so it is not an emergency decision on which way he goes. Certainly though, Guilford will be considered at RB (I have not heard that from the coaches...I just assume that).

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 8:02:27 PM)
Lydell is big time. Keep in mind he didn't turn 18 until December of his freshman year. Many OSU greats still didn't have a touch yet at his age.

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 8:03:16 PM)
We're going to wrap it up in a little bit... be sure to get your last questions in for Jerry!

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 8:03:49 PM)
Easy question for you Jerry...What will the Buckeyes record be in 2003??

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 8:05:18 PM)
Hey, you know I duck this question. On paper, we should win them all. If we show up every week and avoid turnovers, we play in NewOrleans. To be honest, I would not be surprised if we go 1-2 with the big 3 on the road (I am not worried about Purdue at home).

BuckNutty (Jul 17, 2003 8:05:57 PM)
Thanks Jerry!

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 8:06:44 PM)
Thank you guys. I had a blast with everyone talking about this stuff. I always learn some things from these chats.

Drifter (Jul 17, 2003 8:07:07 PM)
yeah, thanks Jerry.

rudzinski (Jul 17, 2003 8:07:10 PM)
Have a good one. I am looking forward to getting after C. Pickett.

Hubbard (Jul 17, 2003 8:07:15 PM)
You learn some stuff? what about us? thanks for the chat

Kirk (Jul 17, 2003 8:07:47 PM)
Take it easy Jerry. Talk to you soon.
