It's hard to fathom that a 6'6 215 pound wide receiver doesn't get a lot of recruiting attention. The sheer physical presence alone is eye catching but when you add great hands, 4.5 speed, and tremendous leaping ability it's down right bothersome that Rontavius McClure only holds 2 scholarship offers currently.
As we stated before we saw McClure in action versus nationally ranked Byrnes and he gave the Rebels fits all night long. The Rebels' Strike Force defense didn't have an answer for him and that's the case with most opposing teams. He's seen double teams and he still posts big numbers in the Trojans' "Air Raid" offense. We caught up with McClure to talk about his career, current season, and recruitment over the weekend.
Having been a force for the Trojans so far this season we were surprised when McClure told us that his best varsity game was from two seasons ago.
"My best game was my sophomore year versus Gaffney. I had 5 catches for 71 yards and scored two touchdowns. It was my first varsity touchdown and I scored not just one but my first two in that game."
Currently the Trojans and McClure are 4-1 on the season with the lone loss coming at the hands of Byrnes. McClure and company will take on nearby South Pointe this coming Friday in what has the makings of another showdown in the battle for the city of Rock Hill.
We asked McClure what he felt were the biggest strengths of his game right now and he was on the money with our own personal assessment of his skills.
"My size, hands, route running, strength, run after the catch, and ability to shield defenders from the ball."
Right now McClure says he has two offers.
"I have offers from Appalachian State and Marshall. Appalachian State is recruiting me the hardest right now I'd say."
The 6'6 215 pound prospect has taken some other visits though. He talked about what he liked best about a pair of ACC schools that he's seen up close and personal.
McClure was straight to the point when it comes to his goals for his team and himself this season.
"To win state and do everything I can to get another ring."
When looking at potential schools McClure says he'll weigh a number of things like education, early playing time, style of play, coaching staff, atmosphere, graduation rates, facilities, and conference strength. The 2013 prospect reports a 3.5 GPA in the classroom which should be great news for potential college coaches. He is awaiting test scores currently and should he get the proper qualifying score you can expect his recruitment to explode in a major way!
He also informed us that he'd like to pursue a degree in the business field when he gets to college.
We expect things to pick up drastically for McClure as word starts to spread about the 6'6 wide receiver. We'll have more updates with the Northwestern standout as the season progresses and his recruitment starts to pick up more steam so keep it right here!
