IU: Report Card

Who made the grade and who came up short as the Nittany Lions topped the Hoosiers? We let you know.

Our report card from Penn State's 45-22 win over Indiana at Beaver Stadium.

OVERALL: Indiana was way overmatched. This game turned out to be easy, but Penn State should have put it away much earlier.
Grade: B

OFFENSE: You have to take into account just how bad the Hoosier defense is when grading here. Again, a lot of good stuff. But even with 546 total yards, it sure seemed like PSU could have scored even more.
Grade: B-

DEFENSE: As we noted, the Lions gave up 454 yards (not to mention 23 first downs). But they generally toughened up when it mattered, allowing only 23 points off of all of those yards.
Grade: B-

SPECIAL TEAMS: Generally speaking, a good day for these units.
Grade: B+

COACHING: We're nitpicking because that's what we do. But we thought Bill O'Brien and the offensive staff could have done an even better job of establishing the run.
Grade: B

INTANGIBLES: This team could have come unglued when senior leader Michael Mauti went down with a knee injury. But it didn't.
Grade: A

OTHER GUY: The Hoosiers do some nice things offensively but are really bad on defense.
Grade: C-

OFFICIALS: Not sure how all of the officials missed the illegal chop block that appears to have ended Mauti's senior season and PSU career. Simply outrageous.
Grade: F

CROWD: Don't laugh. Yes, there were empty seats. But given the timing of PSU's Thanksgiving break, the turnout -- especially of students -- was impressive.
Grade: A
