Wildcats hold off Baylor

The Wildcats were reeling after a rough week, so a trip to Texas appeared challenging. Yet, Northwestern earned a needed road victory, beating Baylor 74-70 in Waco.

Northwestern was reeling as it entered Texas, having dropped two dropped two straight games—each gut-wrenching in their own way. A battle with Baylor wasn't supposed to lighten the load.

The Wildcats rebounded from a rough week, holding off Baylor for a 74-70 victory in Waco.

Reggie Hearn posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but fouled out late in the second half. Drew Crawford led all scorers with 19 points. In whole, each of Northwestern's five starters posted double-figure scoring.

The margin first turned in Northwestern's favor when point guard Dave Sobolewski drilled a buzzer-beating three-pointer—part of his 13-point performance—taking his team to the locker room with its first lead of the game.

The Wildcats were poised to pull away in the second half, opening an 18-point lead on another Sobolewski three-pointer. As the sophomore sprinted down the court, he offered taunting words for Baylor point guard Pierre Jackson, forcing the officials to stop play and issue a warning.

Baylor appeared fired up following the exchange. The large lead Northwestern owned began to disintegrate, but time was ticking away.

In the game's final seconds, Sobolewski sank a free throw to give his team a four-point lead. Baylor center Isaiah Austin connected on a three-pointer, bringing the Bears within two points. However, Drew Crawford secured the Wildcats' victory with two free throws.

With the victory in hand, Northwestern faces another tough challenge ahead. The Butler Bulldogs will test the Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday night.
