Whitfield, 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, is one of the top 2014 prospects in Ohio, and he currently holds offers from Toledo and Bowling Green. He is also receiving Big Ten interest, as well as in-state Cincinnati.
"In the past couple weeks Ohio State, Cincinnati, Penn State and Michigan State have all been in the high school to see me," Whitfield stated. "I really like the three Big Ten schools a lot and they have all invited me to come for junior days after the first of the year."
"I'm definitely going to Michigan State for sure, and they are recruiting me pretty hard, although they have not offered," he added. "Ohio State also wants me to call after the first of the year to set up a visit, and I'm being recruited by Mike Vrabel. I have visited Ohio State for a game already. Penn State is a school I don't know much about, but I'm definitely interested. They had a great season this year, and I was impressed by how they all stuck together."
He is being recruited as an athlete by all schools, and nobody has specified a position yet. Whitfield took off as a wide receiver in the second half of the season, and posted big numbers.
"Nobody has really indicated where they are recruiting me for, in terms of a position," he explained. "Everyone is recruiting me as an athlete, and I don't care what position I play. I'm working on speed and route-running this off-season."
For his junior season, Whitfield caught 32 passes for 642 yards and five touchdowns.
