Bank Blog: Tuesday Recruiting Update

Things are changing daily for Ohio State in the attempt to fill out the 2013 recruiting class. What transpired Monday that could impact National Signing Day?

- The big news on Monday was Ohio State finally GOING on Corey Smith, and he is firmly in the cross hairs right now. Assistant coaches Tom Herman and Zach Smith will be making a visit to see Smith in person Tuesday, and so will members of Tennessee's coaching staff. Smith is scheduled to visit Tennessee this weekend, and he is still committed to Mississippi State. I've said all along if Ohio State would push for Smith, they would get him. That push is starting.

- What DIDN'T happen Monday? There were no reaffirmations from either Trey Johnson or Ezekiel Elliott that either was all solid to Ohio State. That needs to take place, and the longer it doesn't the more doubt starts to creep in. Not looking for statements from coaches, parents, neighbors or girl friends. Would like to hear from Zeke and Trey just where things stand in their recruitments.

- Darren Carrington will visit Ohio State officially this week, although nobody is talking about this four-star wide receiver. Let's talk. Is there a chance the Oregon commit could actually flip to the Buckeyes? It sure seems this player is actively looking to leave the Ducks. Would distance be a problem? His father played in the NFL, so the family knows how to handle that possible roadblock. I have this one as a real possibility if the visit actually takes place.

- Dontre Wilson had a great visit to Ohio State, and writing him out of this class would be premature. I think this will become a National Signing Day decision, and Ohio State could absolutely land this one. Way too soon to write off Urban Meyer with this kid.

- James Clark seems like he should be a done deal to Florida, and he's spent more time on that campus than any recruit in America. The lack of an official visit is puzzling, and you can count on one hand the number of players that sign with schools without taking one. If the Gators push for Clark, they should get him. If not? It definitely opens it up for Clemson, Ohio State and Northwestern.

- Not sure how Ohio State will proceed with Cornelius Elder and Ryan Timmons. I don't have the feeling they've ever pushed for either player, so it's hard to see either in the class. They want two more receivers, so maybe they turn to these guys if things fall apart late.

- Offensive line recruiting has not gone well for 2013, and I don't see any savior on the horizon at this point. Does that mean Meyer is throwing up his hands on the position? Doubtful. And there is over a week remaining until Signing Day.

- After being an Alabama LOCK two weeks ago, Vonn Bell is now a Tennessee LOCK, following that visit. Where does the "lock" talk come from? What does it all mean? To me, it means that Ohio State is squarely in the mix for Vonn Bell. Going into the official visits, Ohio State had a slight lead for Bell and although Tennessee moved up after last weekend, do not count Meyer out of this one. Relationships and comfort are the key, and Ohio State established both with Bell. Can Ohio State sign Vonn Bell? Why not?
