While news broke Tuesday afternoon centering on the parting of ways with Michigan and 2014 IMG Academy (Fla.) offensive tackle Denzel Ward, the Michigan coaching staff was working to find a suitable and even larger replacement to start over their offensive line haul in Peachtree Ridge (Ga.) high school's Orlando Brown.
Now at 6'7, 345 pounds -- down from 376 -- Brown has caught the eye and interest of the Wolverines. Michigan assistant Jeff Hecklinski was in his school Tuesday and heard promising things from the conversation between his high school coach and the Maize and Blue.
"(They talked) pretty much about the weight I've lost since he (Hecklinski) was there last time for spring practice," Brown told GoBlueWolverine. "And just how much I've developed as a player."
Impressing with his physical stature, long arms, and improving mobility while at the Under Armour Combine at the beginning of January, Brown mentioned his excitement about the Wolverines, and the feelings continue to be mutual.
"I'm pretty interested in them and I feel like they're pretty interested in me," said Brown.
Hosting the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and Arkansas, just to name a few, in school over the past month, Brown will head to South Carolina this weekend for an unofficial visit. Brown also plans to be in Ann Arbor at some point throughout the spring and summer, most likely for a junior day.
As for where Brown's focus is right now, the big offensive tackle's footwork should improve significantly, learning to move quickly and in confined space, as he dabbles in the world of track and field for the first time this spring season.
"Right now I'm just working on shot put and discuss," said Brown. "It's my first year and I'm just working on that and lifting with the football team."
