Signing Day Impact: Jayme Thompson

It's National Signing Day in America, and recruits are faxing their letters of intent to their schools of choice across the country. Who is in the fold at Ohio State for the class of 2013?

Toledo Central Catholic safety Jayme Thompson was the sixth commit to Ohio State's 2013 recruiting class, and the first real surprise. Thompson originally committed to West Virginia, but flipped to the Buckeyes last spring.

With two starters returning at safety, Christian Bryant and C.J. Barnett, Thompson will more than likely be battling for a backup spot. He could also see time on special teams.

BREAKDOWN: Would have to agree with Thompson's own assessment of his performance at the Nike Football Training Camp, and he was much better in Champaign than he was in Columbus. Understand that combines are not set up for a hard-hitting, physical safety to succeed, because he never gets to do what he does best. But Thompson moved well and showed the athletic ability needed to play the position at the next level. Something that needs to be noted was the fact that Thompson went first in every drill, and was the clear leader of the defensive backfield group at NFTC. - Bill Greene

Thompson first impressed us with his ability to play corner and cover man to man in camp settings. He's likely going to play safety at Ohio State, but those cover skills will be an asset. Then we saw him in person during the season and saw a kid that, despite not being overwhelmingly big, was willing to stick his nose in the action and make tackles. Very solid all around prospect. - Allen Trieu

Thompson On Choosing Ohio State: "When we were at practice last Saturday, I loved the way Coach (Everett) Withers coached up the defensive backs," he explained. "He is a very intense coach, and I feel like he is the coach to help me realize my full potential as a player."

"Coach (Urban) Meyer is so passionate, and he wants guys to have fun, but you can tell how serious he is about the game," Thompson added. "I was able to speak to (current commits) Jalin Marshall and Billy Price, and they welcomed me into the class. They made me feel so welcome, that it made the decision very easy. I feel good about my decision, and know it's being done for the right reasons."
